<<As the paralegal profession gains more and more credibility and paralegals are taken more seriously, the job of the paralegal becomes more stressful. You are given more to do. You have more people counting on you. Your tasks become more intensive and more complicated.

With success comes responsibility, which is a very good thing, but how do you balance that responsibility and maintain a stress-free lifestyle?

The answer is that you probably will never have a stress-free lifestyle. There will always be some little thing hanging around to stress you out, whether it has to do with your job, your family, or yourself. In fact, you even need a little bit of stress in your life. It's stress that makes life interesting and adds excitement to your everyday existence.

However, too much stress can have negative physical and mental repercussions. Here are three simple tips for keeping the stress in your life from wreaking havoc on your body:

1. Exercise regularly.

Not very many people like to hear this one. Why? Because not very many people like to exercise. In fact, many of you have probably already quit reading, thinking you'll just skip this whole number.

I want to tell you that exercise does not have to be a horrible thing. Instead of thinking of it as sweating away on a treadmill inside of a stinky, impersonal, overcrowded gym, think of exercise simply as a form of being active.

For example, if you have dogs, start taking them for a long walk every afternoon. If you enjoy jogging but hate gyms, try jogging around your local high school's track. If you are lucky enough to have access to a swimming pool, go for a short swim when you get off work. If you have a bike, start going for a short bike ride every day after dinner. It doesn't have to be uphill. You don't have to become the next Lance Armstrong.

The important thing is that you are moving and you are enjoying yourself. The movement will benefit your body, and the fresh air will benefit your mind, helping you to clear your head and get ready for the next day. The main thing to remember about exercise is that it can be fun. Do only what you enjoy doing. Otherwise, you will hate every minute of it and won't receive all of the benefits.

2. Talk About It.

Everyone needs to vent sometimes, and talking about your stress is one of the best ways to relieve it. Whether it's making a midday Starbucks run with a coworker, having lunch with your best friend, or letting it all out over dinner with your significant other, it's important to talk about the things that bother you during your workday. While you don't want to bore people with endless details about the stress your job is causing you, you do need to have people in your life who will lend an ear when you need to talk.

The best thing about talking about what's stressing you out is that you will get feedback, advice, and sympathy from the people you discuss your problems with—three things that are important to helping you overcome the stress and put it out of your life.

First off, feedback is important because you may learn that the other person has been in a similar situation. This will make you feel like he or she understands your situation and will make you feel less alone. Secondly, advice from an uninvolved party will help you see the situation differently and will help dispel the stress. And last but not least, simply receiving someone's sympathy reassures you that people care about you and want to see you happy and at peace.

3. Take Good Care of Yourself.

During the course of your workday, there may be 20 people or more throwing tasks on your desk, flooding your email inbox with requests, and knocking on your door with favors and assignments. Each of these people wants you to believe that he or she is the most important person in your day and that his or her task is the one you should be concentrating on. I am here to tell you they are wrong.

You are the most important person in your day. You need to realize this and put yourself above everyone and everything else. I don't mean you shouldn't do the work you are assigned. I just mean you don't need to kill yourself to do it.

Instead of rushing through your workday with little or nothing to eat, afraid to leave your desk for even a second, take time out for healthy meals. They will give you energy and ward off headaches and fatigue. Instead of leaving your door open all day, allowing anyone to walk in when he or she pleases, close your office off every once in a while for some peace and quiet. Ask that people knock politely before they enter. You deserve their respect.

Instead of feeling like you are at the mercy of others, try treating yourself like the king or queen that you are. Play your favorite music. Keep a pair of comfy slippers under your desk. Buy the biggest, brightest pot of flowers you can find, and put it right next to your computer screen. Smile every time you look at it, and relax as your stress slips away into oblivion.
