Liza Barry-Kessler has a full plate these days. Serving on the Advisory Board for ''Blog with Integrity'', this mom of two and social media and privacy lawyer has worked with some of the biggest names in the internet game, including EarthLink and America On Line (AOL). She is a lobbyist that represents organizations such as the American Library Association, the International Society for Technology in Education and the Consortium on School Networking. She is also the co-author of ''Privacy in the 21st Century: Issues for Public, School and Academic Libraries'' and ''Global Internet Policy Initiative'' – an advocacy training manual. But there's more – she is an award-winning blogger and is featured in the December 2009 issue of ''Wisconsin Lawyer''.

Barry-Kessler devotes the majority of her time with companies and organizations who have a need to protect not only their data and clients, but also their reputations – especially with all things social media related. Her approach is to custom create solutions that fit the needs of any business and to ensure the legalities are covered in a professional and complete manner, leaving no vulnerabilities. Her approach allows her firm to develop new policies that employees can use on a daily basis and in a clear and easy to understand manner.

Specializing in start up companies and those who might be new to social media, her methods have protected countless larger companies and small businesses protect their foundations so that the company as a whole is protected. From FTC requirements to state and federal compliance laws, her fifteen plus years of experience ensure best practices for all her clients. She is also the creator of Time Magazine's 2008 Invention of the Year, 23andMe.com.

When she's not busy protecting companies, she is busy with public speaking engagements, including Wired Wisconsin, BlogHer, the German political part of the Christian Democratic Union (which was chaired by Chancellor Angela Merkel), American Association of School Librarians, International Society for Technology in Education and the American Library Association, just to name a few.

As mentioned, she is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Law. She also studied at Reed College, the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and Smith College. She is well versed in constitutional law and became a Certified Information Privacy Professional in 2006.

Currently, Barry-Kessler can be found working with the Digital Due Process Coalition, a group of non-profit corporate, academic and legal privacy advocates. The goal is to modernize federal government surveillance laws, a cause she is quite passionate about. Because data and communications change and evolve quickly, it is important to simplify, clarify and unify the ECPA standards so that strong enforcements to the laws can be had.

You can read a recent interview with Barry-Kessler in the February 2010 issue of ABA Journal. The interview, titled ''Just Like Everyone Else'' focused on efforts to include and make GLBT lawyers ''feel at home''. Visit Barry-Kessler's site at PrivacyCounsel.net for more information on her many works and passions or to find out more about social media law or privacy and data security compliance.
