When people think of taxes and the law they often think of the IRS. There is another career that you could get involved with if you enjoy working with numbers and you like helping people. Gaining employment as a tax lawyer is something that not a lot of people think of when they think about lawyers. This kind of profession is one that is needed by a lot of people.
This kind of attorney is one that is in high demand, especially since there are so many people who have trouble with their taxes. Someone who is facing a tax audit by the IRS would be in need of a tax professional such as an attorney. Just think about the massive amount of people that get audited every year and it is easy to see that there is a lot of potential to earn a great deal of money. As long as the IRS plans on auditing people, there will also be a job for the tax lawyer.
In order to become a tax attorney a person must complete their undergraduate degree and also successfully complete law school. Someone that is thinking of gaining future employment as a tax lawyer should consider getting an accounting degree as his or her undergraduate study. Once all of the schooling is completed, a person can then begin to practice as a tax attorney. But how much can a tax lawyer expect to make each year? Some people tend to think that attorneys will make several hundred thousand a year right from the start. While that would be really nice, it is generally not the case.
According to the Simply Hired search engine, the average yearly salary for a tax lawyer was $63,000 in 2008. But there have been many employment openings for these positions with salaries starting at $80,000 to $100,000. Unfortunately, the government does not post a more accurate average for those people in this field. The amount of money that a lawyer can expect to make in this field will vary depending on the education they received, the experience that they have, and where in the United States they are located.
With so many different places that a lawyer can find employment for this field, there should be no worries about finding a job. Various employers include private companies, law firms, government agencies, and financial institutions. Even though tax lawyers can be found throughout the entire United States, the lucrative financial markets of Washington DC, New York City, and Chicago may be a good place to start the job search. If you are not willing to relocate that is fine. There are still going to be plenty of good job opportunities in your area.
The more experience a person has as a tax lawyer, the better job offers he or she will receive. Those with at least two years of experience in being a tax lawyer, those who have a Master's degree and who are a licensed CPA are most likely to be the people that are hired by the law firms. This is not to say that someone with less experience or a smaller degree will not be able to find employment with a law firm but it may be a little harder.
Even though lawyers who are fresh out of school may not land their dream job right from the start, it is something that can easily be worked up to. With the tax lawyer profession being one that is rapidly on the rise, lawyers will be able to find a better paying job after a couple years of hands on experience. And since it seems that this is not a job market that is going to be slowing down any time soon it is easy to see that there are indeed a lot of job opportunities.
Now that you know a little more about this profession you may be interested in becoming a lawyer. Start your schooling now. The sooner you get started the sooner it will be over with and you can begin helping people with their tax needs. And since you will be so busy studying all of the tax laws while in school, time will seem to fly right by.
