On Thursday, April 12, the New Jersey Supreme Court assigned a committee to come up with concrete plans for a required CLE program in the state. There will be 29 attorneys and judges on the committee, officially named the Ad Hoc Committee on Continuing Legal Education.

According to a quote in the New Jersey Law Journal, "the committee will concentrate on advising the Court on what type of CLE should be required for new attorneys, what CLE requirements should be expected of all attorneys as they continue in their careers, and on alternative ways in which those requirements can be satisfied."

In addition to the standard CLE requirements, New Jersey's CLE program would take into account attorneys who are licensed in more than one state. The committee will also decide whether or not to make CLE mandatory for judges.

Since most New Jersey attorneys who are certified to practice in either New York or Pennsylvania have already been attending CLE classes, many in New Jersey feel that attorneys won't mind the changes very much. William Dreier, a retired appellate division judge, thinks that even though many attorneys keep up with legal issues and changing laws on their own, mandating CLE courses would ensure that all attorneys would.

Attorneys in the state will most likely have a chance to voice their opinions about mandatory CLE requirements at the state bar convention on May 16.
