<<It seems like just 16 weeks ago I started writing this column, although it's actually been 17 weeks. They weren't all good times. Often I was so hung over, I could scarcely summon the energy to copy and paste tidbits from other people's blogs. Other times, I just didn't feel like doing it, so I blew it off and had one of the interns in my office do it for me. Rather than beginning by summarizing the week's news from the law blogosphere, I'd like to show you all a letter I recently received after I first announced my retirement from the law blog game. It's not every day that you get a piece of mail that touches you in such a special way, so I wanted to share it with my fans before I depart.

After reading that letter, I was struck by the frailty of life. It made me want to climb a mountain or get a famous woman pregnant. I can no longer stand to watch life passing me by. That's why I've decided to join a Buddhist monastery in North Hollywood, CA. I'm dedicating my life to the Lord, whichever Lord Buddhists believe in. But before that, let's get these last few law blog items out of the way.

America's sweetheart, Denise Howell, the law blogger unfairly ousted from her firm, has alerted us to the latest instance of a judge citing the works of a law blogger. This time, preeminent legal scholar and blawgger Eugene Volokh was quoted in a District Court dissent. Ian Best of 3L Epiphany is keeping a running total of the number of courts that have cited law blogs. As of 3L Epiphany's most recently update, there are 32 citations of legal blogs from 27 different cases, with 8 legal blogs being cited. This means that blogs are steadily becoming legitimized as a form of scholarship (like it or not) and that certain law bloggers are advancing beyond mere Internet celebrity.

Last week, Kevin O'Keefe of LexBlog wrote about blogger Ana Marie Cox, formerly of Wonkette, and how she has been stolen away by Time. In the article, he mentioned the hardworking bloggers of Legal Blog Watch, Robert Ambrogi and Carolyn Elefant, and how they too could be stolen away from Legal Blog Watch's parent company, American Lawyer Media, if ALM doesn't watch its back. While Elefant and Ambrogi were flattered to be singled out for such praise, others thought O'Keefe was totally out of line. In particular, his public pondering of how much the Legal Blog Watch bloggers are being paid drew criticism. O'Keefe, always looking for a fight, posted an email from the anonymous author of Blawg Review in which the anonymous blogger took O'Keefe to task. This left the guys from Legal Blog Watch scrambling to make it clear that A) they had no idea O'Keefe was going to talk about them and how much they are paid, B) they don't need anybody else to take up their cause, and C) they're happy working for ALM. O'Keefe also mentioned that he didn't think ALM understood the power of blogs and the Internet in general, leaving the Legal Blog Watchers to do their best to defend their employers. The whole thing is a little pointless and verges on navel-gazing, but it's funny. It seems that O'Keefe thought he was helping Ambrogi and Elefant out, but apparently they didn't need that kind of help.

Anyone who watches Stephen Colbert knows he hates two things: bears and facts. So it was no surprise when he took on Wikipedia, the community-run online encyclopedia, and encouraged his fans to add crazy made-up statistics to Wikipedia, thus making fantasy a reality. Wikipedia fought back, blocking certain listings from being edited. But there is still a lot of material on Wikipedia of questionable veracity. Ted Frank of Overlawyered went looking for legally themed Wikipedia entries that were inaccurate and found plenty. The respective entries for trial lawyers (and Democrats) Fred Baron and John Edwards sound like they were written by their PR reps. The Association of Trial Lawyers of America sounds like the most important organization in American history in its Wikipedia entry. Topics like medical malpractice and toxic torts were clearly written by lawyers who oppose tort reform, as all statistics and facts that support tort reform are omitted. With more and more people utilizing Internet sources for research, it's kind of scary to think about Wikipedia's varying reliability. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales claims that his site is about as reliable as Encyclopedia Britannica, which also gets it wrong about 25% of the time.

And there we have it. That's all the news from the law blogs and chat boards. Perhaps that's all the news there ever will be. Or maybe next week, we will see a new law blog aficionado on LawCrossing bringing you tidings from the blogosphere. So long, everybody!
