Job Title: Assistant General Counsel - Employment Law
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant General Counsel conducts in-depth legal research and analysis to provide legal guidance and support to the General Counsel, University senior leadership, staff, and faculty regarding legal risks involving the university. This role requires regular collaboration with the University’s Office of Human Resources, Equal Opportunity & Regulatory Compliance, and other administrative units to advise on a full spectrum of employment law issues arising in day-to-day operations. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing legal counsel on employment matters such as hiring, promotion, discipline, termination, compensation, benefits, leaves of absence, accommodations, and workplace investigations.
- Advising Human Resources on compliance with federal and state employment laws including Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, ADEA, and other employment-related statutes.
- Assisting in the development, review, and implementation of employment policies and procedures.
- Supporting internal investigations and responding to complaints involving discrimination, harassment, and other employment-related issues.
- Representing the University before administrative agencies such as the EEOC, DOL, and state agencies.
- Providing training and guidance to HR professionals, managers, and University leadership on employment law topics and risk mitigation.
- Drafting and reviewing employment-related agreements, including severance, settlement, and performance agreements.
- Collaborating with other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel to support the broader legal needs of the University.
Essential Functions include, but are not limited to:
- Meeting with senior leadership, staff, and faculty on a broad range of legal issues to provide advice and counsel.
- Completing legal research, fact-gathering, and analysis to determine the appropriate course of action and providing recommendations to the General Counsel.
- Preparing written work product in the form of memos, policies, letters, etc., to the General Counsel, senior leadership, and other internal clients as directed.
Education and Experience Information:
For the position of Assistant General Counsel, the minimum education requirement is a Juris Doctor degree, with a preference for a Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA-accredited law school. The candidate must be licensed to practice law in the state of Mississippi or obtain admission to the Mississippi Bar within six months of employment. A minimum of six years of experience is required.
Salary Information:
The salary for the position of Assistant General Counsel falls within the following range:
- Minimum: $110,594
- Midpoint: $138,237
- Maximum: $165,880
The role of Associate General Counsel, which is a related position, offers a salary range as follows:
- Minimum: $133,827
- Midpoint: $167,274
- Maximum: $200,720
