Job Title: Director of Business Development – Litigation & Advisory
Job Responsibilities:
The Director of Business Development is a critical and visible role within the law firm, responsible for serving as the primary business development and strategic advisor for the firm's Litigation & Advisory practices. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing strategic direction, coaching, and planning for marketing and business development activities within the Litigation & Advisory practices.
- Collaborating closely with practice group leaders and key stakeholders to drive strategy, planning, and execution of business development and marketing initiatives.
- Supervising, mentoring, and managing the day-to-day responsibilities of the Business Development & Marketing Products team, ensuring alignment with the firm’s strategic efforts and exceptional client service.
- Developing and implementing comprehensive business development strategies, identifying market opportunities, and creating plans to capitalize on them.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with partners, clients, and stakeholders, enhancing client satisfaction, and ensuring long-term partnerships.
- Conducting market research to understand industry trends, client needs, and the competitive landscape, and translating insights into actionable business strategies.
- Communicating effectively with clients, partners, and internal stakeholders, presenting ideas and strategies clearly and persuasively.
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships within the legal industry and beyond to identify and pursue new business opportunities and partnerships.
- Understanding financial principles, developing budgets and forecasts, and managing financial performance to achieve revenue targets.
- Leading and motivating the business development team, mentoring team members to achieve their full potential.
- Managing multiple initiatives simultaneously, ensuring projects are completed on time and within scope.
- Utilizing business development tools and software to enhance efforts and improve efficiency.
- Negotiating favorable terms and agreements with partners, vendors, and in-house procurement teams.
- Adapting to changing market conditions and client needs, developing creative solutions and strategies to ensure the organization remains agile and forward-thinking.
- Managing continuous communication and interaction with departmental and practice leadership, including responsibility for periodic meetings, reports, analysis, and progress monitoring.
- Contributing to marketing and business development training and professional development modules for lawyers and department members.
- Performing other duties as assigned or required to meet the firm's goals and objectives.
Education and Experience Information:
Education/Training/Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Research, Communications, or related field, required.
- Advanced degree (., a Master’s degree, a ., an ., or a .), preferred.
Professional Experience:
- Minimum of ten years of demonstrated success in a marketing, research, management, and/or communications-related field, either in the professional services (., law, accounting, or consulting) or in a comparable position(s) in the corporate, trade association, or academic sectors, required.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, required.

- Manages processes for direct reports including performance appraisals, annual compensation, goal setting, and performance counseling.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
- Operational budget analysis and recommendations.
- Conducts analysis of staffing levels and participation in the recruitment process.
- Able to determine and implement change processes to improve workflow efficiencies.
- Process- and service-oriented with strong leadership and project management skills.
- Able to set priorities and delegate in an efficient manner.

Salary Information:
The typical pay scale for this position varies by location:
- In New York, between $237,600 and $342,100.
- In Chicago, between $211,800 and $304,900.
- In Washington, ., between $218,100 and $314,000.
The actual wage or salary could be lower or higher depending on the candidate’s education, experience, skills, and internal pay alignment.
Additional Information:
This position is part of the Business Development and Marketing department and is categorized as exempt. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8:30 . to 5:00 . or 9:00 . to 5:30 ., with additional hours as needed.
