Job Title: Legal Assistant II - Protective Order Assignment - CA

Job Responsibilities:
The Legal Assistant II is responsible for providing advanced legal assistance to the assigned legal staff and acts as a liaison between attorneys, courts, witnesses, law enforcement agencies, other agencies, and the public. The role involves drafting all necessary legal documents and supporting legal staff in various capacities. Specific responsibilities include:

- Preparing petitions, motions, orders, and other legal documents.
- Requesting hearing dates, mediation dates, and other settings.
- Preparing and sending notices of court hearings.
- Researching case information and managing files, copies, and mailings.
- Arranging and coordinating witnesses and notarizing legal documents.
- Attending court to assist attorneys as needed.
- Assisting with the preparation of discovery, subpoenas, briefs, bench warrants, and other time-sensitive legal documents.
- Managing records and filing, including e-filing and using the County’s electronic case management system.
- Maintaining calendars, case files, and dockets.
- Assimilating legal discovery and processing Public Information Requests.
- Serving as backup to other Legal Assistants as needed.
- Maintaining the division’s central email inbox, responding to inquiries, monitoring E-file notifications, and taking required action.
- Communicating with staff, private attorneys, local mental health authority counselors, jail staff, courthouse personnel, citizens, and outside agencies.
- Reviewing and evaluating legal documents and information received by the division, determining the appropriate action or response necessary, and drafting legal documents or materials for attorney review.
- Providing subject matter support for technology and business process development and applicable software.
- Facilitating interagency transfer of documents.
- Preparing trial notebooks for prosecutors and assisting with courtroom technology for displaying evidence.
- Attending all meetings and trainings as required and performing special duties as assigned.

Civil Assignment:
- Scheduling depositions and assisting in the settlement of damage claims.
- Working closely with local mental health authorities and healthcare institutions.
- Coordinating transfers and obtaining necessary paperwork for involuntary commitments or mental health-related matters.
- Communicating with mental health hospitals regarding potential filings and patient status.
- Processing Public Information Act requests and organizing exhibits for briefs submission.
- Assisting with cost estimates for Public Information Requests and organizing secure online links for distribution.

Juvenile Assignment:
- Reconciling Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) records and submitting paper records for criminal history reporting.
- Processing juvenile referrals, preparing legal documents, and notifying relevant parties.
- Reviewing sex offender registration status and calculating child support and restitution.
- Coordinating detention hearings and preparing transfer paperwork for juveniles to be certified as adults.
- Managing communication with law enforcement and various agencies regarding juvenile cases.

Family Justice Assignment:
- Collaborating with outside agencies and arranging mediations.
- Drafting affidavits and coordinating legal interventions.
- Conducting conflict checks and preparing legal documents for attorney review.

Protective Order Assignment:
- Creating case shells and conducting conflict checks.
- Running criminal histories and assisting law enforcement with evidence distribution.
- Organizing service packets and coordinating with process serving agencies.
- Drafting and filing necessary paperwork for protective orders.

Education and Experience Information:
- Minimum qualifications include an Associate degree in a related field and one (1) year of legal experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is required.

Licenses and Certifications:
- A valid driver’s license is required within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification, Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) certification, and Texas Notary Public Commission are required within six (6) months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Paralegal certification and working knowledge of various software tools such as Odyssey, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Sign, Laserfiche, Kronos, Alice, and Jabber.
- Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

Salary Information:
- The position offers a salary of hourly.
