Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Appeals Division of the organization is tasked with handling appeals originating from nearly all of the litigating divisions within the department. The role involves preparing amicus briefs in cases that implicate the interests of the City. Attorneys in this position are responsible for briefing and arguing appeals before federal and state appellate courts, covering a wide array of cases. These cases range from those involving administrative law and constitutional issues, such as enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales, to more routine litigation associated with the governance of a large municipality and complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and significant public policy issues. The position offers a unique perspective on municipal governance and an opportunity to engage in high-level appellate practice, contributing to legal developments that impact the City. The role requires working both independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff to manage a significant number of appeals annually.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of being admitted. While prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement. The organization seeks candidates who are committed to public service and possess excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.

Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $87, to $175,.

Additional Information:
The organization offers a flexible work arrangement after orientation, where attorneys can choose to work from home under two different programs. One allows for limited and irregular remote work, while the other is a pilot program permitting two set days of remote work per week, subject to approval and division needs. Participants in the pilot program must attend in-person responsibilities on their remote workdays if required. The organization is currently testing this pilot program Citywide to evaluate its effectiveness.
