Job Title: Senior Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
Senior Attorneys work with a high degree of independence and confidentiality in their roles. Their primary responsibilities include researching legal questions and issues, organizing investigations, and preparing and presenting cases before administrative tribunals and courts. They play a significant role in providing legal research and advocacy services within the Mental Hygiene Legal Services, attorney disciplinary committees, 18B panel administration, or similar units. Additionally, they may be responsible for overseeing a departmental law guardian program. Specific duties associated with the assignment to the Mental Hygiene Legal Service in New York and Bronx County include:
- Assigning research tasks and supervising the preparation of cases
- Presenting cases before administrative tribunals and trial courts
- Drafting correspondence related to case inquiries
- Researching and analyzing complex legal questions and issues
- Interviewing litigants, witnesses, and other parties involved in administrative and judicial proceedings

Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the position of Senior Attorney, candidates must have admission to the New York State Bar and two years of service in the Attorney title, or possess equivalent legal experience.

Salary Information:
The base salary for the Senior Attorney position is $99,490, with an additional $4,920 as location pay.

General Information:
The position is classified as non-competitive/confidential and is situated at the Appellate Division, First Department, within the Mental Hygiene Legal Service in New York and Bronx County. While the position is available at a specific location, the appointee may be subject to reassignment to any position in the same title within the promotion unit, based on the needs of the Unified Court System. The announcement notes that all applications received may be used to fill any vacancies in the title that may occur within the court or agency over the next six months. Currently, three positions are available.
