Overview:
The organization is currently seeking a Senior Attorney to join their team in the Adult Protective Services Litigation and Program Counseling Unit (APS/LPCU). This is a full-time position with a salary range of $87, – $100, and is located in Manhattan, New York. The Senior Attorney will be responsible for providing legal services of a more complex nature on behalf of the Commissioner, with significant financial, procedural or policy consequences. This role will also involve counseling and providing legal guidance to the senior staff of APS on pertinent legal issues, as well as handling complex litigation related to Mental Hygiene Law Article 81 guardianships for incapacitated adults at risk of homelessness, abuse or other hazards.
Responsibilities:
- Counsel and provide legal guidance to senior staff on pertinent legal issues, policies, procedures, publications and special projects
- Review and assess referrals from APS for potential legal action and train APS staff on legal matters relating to Mental Hygiene Law Article 81 guardianships
- Handle complex litigation, including commencing legal actions for guardianship appointments for incapacitated adults at risk of homelessness, abuse or other hazards
- Act as liaison and coordinate with programs and the New York City Law Department on major litigation, including class actions
- Attend Multi-disciplinary Team meetings and perform other related tasks as needed
Qualifications:
- Admission to the New York State Bar and either one year of satisfactory legal experience or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne
- Experience with proper courtroom etiquette, law and civil procedure
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills
- Ability to articulate the law and advocate on behalf of the organization
- Superior legal research and writing ability and time management discipline
- Residency in New York City is not required for this position
