They need to improve the staffing situation. It would lead to fewer hours worked for every attorney, and it would improve mentoring. If they promoted up more it would also lead to more associates staying.

Some Room for Improvement, but a Good Firm to Work for

Many areas are definitely understaffed. The management is generally unwilling to promote, which is leading to the issue of there not being enough senior associates around to train new junior associates. It's lead to me working more hours than I would want. It has led to junior associates leaving for other firms.

Pro bono

Proskauer Rose encourages all attorneys to bill a minimum of 50 pro bono hours annually, and every first-year associate is assigned his or her own pro bono matter when starting at the firm. In 2010, 76% of associates each performed 62 hours of pro bono work.

Summer associate program

The summer program is a gateway for entry of new lawyers at Proskauer. It has remained so for more than 30 years and for many of its current partners, Proskauer was the first firm to begin their career. Proskauer Rose offers a 10-week summer program in most of its domestic offices. The program is considered as an all-around 'great' experience. Summer associates are expected to complete 6 to 15 assignments during the summer.

The summer program includes periodic seminars and other activities, like participation in a cross-examination workshop, a corporate negotiation workshop, a legal ethics seminar, and a litigation workshop, all of which are designed to develop practice skills, provide insights into substantive legal issues and impart the basics of various practice areas.

The firm made offers to 88% of its 2009 summer associates. In 2010, the firm had a 100% offer rate among its 36 summer associates, but the firm reduced the summer class size by 65% from 112 summer associates the previous year. Proskauer also gave 100% offers to its 2011 New York summer class. Summer associates get compensation of US $ 3,077 per week.
