Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP. Reviews

- Reviewed on July 21, 2017

Advice to law firm management: Don't go in expecting to bring something new and fresh to this environment. They have established routines. Let them dictate how and what work gets done. Be a team player and don't rock the boat.

Pros: The firm is well established and has a good routine about it. The environment is a positive one and everyone is helpful. This firm is an older one so it has a more settled feel to it.

Cons: Because this is an older firm most of the staff and partners have been there a long time and are pretty set in there ways so there isn't much room for change or advancement.

Carter Ledyard has a long-standing commitment to diversity, and one of our primary goals is to recruit, retain and promote a diverse group of attorneys and staff throughout the firm. CL&M was one of the first firms to sign the New York City Bar Statement of Diversity Principles. We recognize diversity as an important element of our culture, our business and our values. Differences among our attorneys have made Carter Ledyard stronger, more dynamic and more creative and have resulted in our being better able to serve the needs of our clients. Our commitment to maintain a diverse workforce remains at the center of our recruiting, retention and promotion efforts as we seek to maintain a culture which allows every Carter Ledyard employee to reach his or her full potential. Carter Ledyard is proud of its ongoing commitment to increasing diversity throughout our firm. In furtherance of our efforts to provide equal opportunity for all, Carter Ledyard has participated in a number of programs and has instituted a range of initiatives that will enhance our professional lives and contribute to the success of the firm.

Summer associate program

The firm's permanent hiring needs are primarily satisfied each year through its summer program. The program is usually 8 to 12 weeks long, with some flexibility allowing for at least a minimum of eight weeks. Summer associates usually share an office with a first-year associate. The firm hosts a variety of events for summer associates, including a firm cocktail party, firm summer dinner, sports and cultural events.

Rather than a formal rotation system, during the summer one partner supervises the summer associates to ensure that each has full opportunity to work on a variety of assignments in different firm practice areas with as many lawyers in the office as possible. A summer associate's desire for particular work is respected, and accommodated where practical. In addition, summer associates who would like to spend two weeks with a pro bono organization during the summer may do so through the Firm's affiliation with New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. Participating associates will be paid the regular salary during such internships.

Everyone Loves LawCrossing

LawCrossing was probably the best legal board I have used. I liked the layout and it was user friendly. I tried to use another job board, but it was not user friendly and was kind of a pain, whereas LawCrossing was easy to use to find jobs. I really liked it. I would certainly recommend this site and service to my colleagues.
