Advice to law firm management:
Don't go in expecting to bring something new and fresh to this environment. They have established routines. Let them dictate how and what work gets done. Be a team player and don't rock the boat.
Pros:
The firm is well established and has a good routine about it. The environment is a positive one and everyone is helpful. This firm is an older one so it has a more settled feel to it.
Cons:
Because this is an older firm most of the staff and partners have been there a long time and are pretty set in there ways so there isn't much room for change or advancement.

Academic achievement at law school is important, but not dispositive. Outstanding undergraduate academic record as well as extra-curricular activities and inter-personal skills are considered.
Pro bono
Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP encourages all lawyers, including first year and summer associates, to handle pro bono matters focused in all areas of the Firm's practice. A partner is in charge of each pro bono matter. Cases are worked on during regular business hours and are treated with the same care as regular clients' matters and hours worked on such projects are accounted for in the same way as work on paying clients matters. Projects include regular corporate tax and other legal services for not-for-profit entities; prosecuting criminal appeals for the District Attorney's office; and representing pro se plaintiffs in the Eastern and Southern Federal District Courts. Some of the organizations that receive on-going pro bono assistance from the Firm include New York Lawyers for the Public Interest; New York County District Attorneys Appeals Program; Legal Aid, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and Eastern and Southern United States District Courts.

Summer associate program
The firm's permanent hiring needs are primarily satisfied each year through its summer program. The program is usually 8 to 12 weeks long, with some flexibility allowing for at least a minimum of eight weeks. Summer associates usually share an office with a first-year associate. The firm hosts a variety of events for summer associates, including a firm cocktail party, firm summer dinner, sports and cultural events.
Rather than a formal rotation system, during the summer one partner supervises the summer associates to ensure that each has full opportunity to work on a variety of assignments in different firm practice areas with as many lawyers in the office as possible. A summer associate's desire for particular work is respected, and accommodated where practical. In addition, summer associates who would like to spend two weeks with a pro bono organization during the summer may do so through the Firm's affiliation with New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. Participating associates will be paid the regular salary during such internships.
