Advice to law firm management: Make sure that you don't let any good eggs get stuck with the bad eggs because of a simple misunderstanding.

Pros: I have been here for around two years now and everyone is happy and friendly. Any issues that I have had come up have been quickly fixed.

Cons: Some people don't last here very long because of how swiftly problems are dealt with. Some good eggs get mixed up in that.

Pros: They work in a variety of practice areas. The firm has a great reputation and is also very up-to-date on technology. The staff was pleasant to work with. The hours were flexible.

Hiring Criteria

Kirkland & Ellis LLP follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

Kirkland & Ellis, like other top-ranking law firms hires students with excellent academic records. But the firm also keeps an eye out for people from diverse backgrounds. Also, an undergrad major in business and accounting helps if you are planning to work in this firm. People who have worked there say that associates need to be self-reliant and who will "swim in a sink or swim environment".

Pro bono

Kirkland is committed to providing legal services without charge to those who cannot afford counsel, with the goals of improving lives, bettering communities and deepening our professional experience. The Firm is committed to serving diverse communities. Through pro bono work, the lawyers make their skills and talents available to those who cannot afford legal representation. They provide pro bono clients with the same commitment and diligence they show for our traditional clients. The Kirkland & Ellis Foundation provides financial support to charitable and law-related organizations that enhance the quality of life through education, improved community services, cultural awareness, youth programs, healthcare, diversity sensitivity and many other initiatives.

Notable cases

  • In March 2012, Kirkland & Ellis LLP won a major victory for its client Morgan Stanley and other underwriters in the case Credit Suisse v. Simmonds in the Supreme Court. The verdict was 8-0 and the Supreme Court reversed the Ninth Circuit's ruling. Kirkland was joined by other law firms and the case involved the time allowed for filing a lawsuit to recover impermissible short-swing profits under Section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Now plaintiffs will not be able to bring Section 16(b) claims after the time limit has passed.
  • Kirkland & Ellis represented retail giant The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (A&P) and its affiliates in their Chapter 11 cases. In March 2012, A&P emerged from bankruptcy and its reorganization was the largest one of a debtor-retailer after the changes in the Bankruptcy Code in 2005.

Kirkland believes that lawyers should offer the highest level of commitment to the profession. The firm is dedicated to building a team of lawyers who bring a broad range of benefits though they come from different socioeconomic, racial, ethnic and personal backgrounds. Our commitment to diversity is reflected not only in the Firm's policies, programs and committees, but also through our efforts to build and maintain a culture that values and gathers strength from difference.

Kirkland is a strong and dynamic institution with a strategic network of offices located in major business centers around the globe. In line with our strategy of sensible, organic growth, the Firm has expanded geographically to meet the needs of our clients while maintaining a strong focus on quality control. The Diversity Fellowship Program provides a $15,000 stipend payable during the recipient's third year of law school. Since its inception, the firm has awarded 82 fellowship grants totaling more than $1.2 million.

In 2008, Kirkland launched a unique and highly effective program called "ALLSA", an inclusive term that reflects our formal mission to reach out to "all" racial, ethnic, women's, and LGBT student groups (i.e., BLSA, APALSA, OUTLaw, etc.) at law schools across the country.

Summer associate program

Kirkland is unique because of the emphasis that the firm places on formal training and development of their lawyers. Kirkland's summer associate program does more than just teach the associates about the basics but offers students a realistic glimpse of their future as a lawyer.

Kirkland is a reputable firm and offers competitive salary, coupled with excellent opportunities for training with experienced and successful lawyers. Summer associates are assigned with challenging work and the opportunity to take real responsibility early and often. There are various summer associate training programs including Litigation training, Transactional Training, Restructuring Training and so on.

Working for the Kirkland & Ellis LLP

Kirkland & Ellis is a thriving and energetic place to work and unique too. The firm recruits talented individuals from diverse backgrounds who have brilliant ideas to drive the firm forward. The firm boosts achievement and growth on individual basis.

Most lawyers will be allowed to work directly with partners on challenging cases and transactions right from first day. One can learn immensely through hands-on experience and can develop more easily than other peers working in other firms.

In addition to the early responsibility, the training is one area which the firm delivers impeccably well. Training provided by Kirkland Institute has been widely recognized as among the best in the country. Mock trial exercises, lectures and presentations are held in tandem from time to time.

All Kirkland attorneys can take on assignments through a "free-market" system where they can pick and choose what interests them, and the cases which have the ability to shape their career and work experience.

The founding vision of Barack Ferrazzano in 1984 was to create a new model that departed from the standard "mega-firm" approaches and, instead, focused on delivering efficient, team-oriented services of the highest quality. Our founding partners - two highly respected law professors at Northwestern University and two former members of a prominent Chicago firm - were soon joined by like-minded colleagues also seeking an alternative to the large law firm environment. We have grown steadily ever si...
