Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel position in the Appeals Division of the organization involves handling appeals originating from nearly all of the litigating divisions within the department and preparing amicus briefs in cases that implicate the City's interests. The responsibilities include appearing before federal and state appellate courts, briefing and arguing appeals across various cases, and addressing administrative law and constitutional issues, including enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales. The role also encompasses handling a broad range of subject matters from routine litigation involving the governance of a municipality with over eight million residents to complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and critical public policy issues. Attorneys in this position gain a unique perspective on city operations and contribute to legal developments impacting the City. Working both independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff, the selected candidate will brief and argue a significant number of appeals annually.

The position offers attorneys the opportunity to work from home through one of two programs after completing orientation. The first option allows for limited and irregular remote work, while the second option, a Citywide pilot program, permits two set days of remote work each week, subject to division approval and coverage requirements. Attorneys must attend in-person responsibilities on remote work days if needed, and they must designate one work-from-home location for remote work.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of being admitted. Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills are required. While prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred, it is not mandatory.

Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $87, to $175,.
