Job Title: Legal Assistant
Job Responsibilities:
The primary role of a Legal Assistant at the State Public Defender's Office is to support attorneys in providing comprehensive representation to clients involved in criminal, juvenile, or child protection cases. This position involves a variety of tasks to assist attorneys in their duties and ensure the efficient handling of cases. Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the review, preparation, and processing of legal documents and discovery materials.
- Generating motions, memoranda, and pleadings within the case management system (CMS).
- Providing document management support during meetings, hearings, and trials.
- Entering and reviewing data in the CMS in accordance with guidelines.
- Assisting with the preparation of trial exhibits.
- Communicating effectively with clients and court personnel.
- Filing documents electronically and ensuring proper documentation.
- Tracking personal time and tasks within the CMS.
- Assisting attorneys with various administrative tasks and projects as needed.
- Maintaining confidentiality of client information and adhering to ethical standards.
- Organizing electronic case files within the CMS.
- Answering phone calls, sending emails, and greeting clients in the office.
- Demonstrating high proficiency with CMS, legal, and administrative software and platforms.
- Managing calendars, including scheduling events, deadlines, and appointments.
- Performing other duties as assigned by supervisors or attorneys.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the Legal Assistant position, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- One to five years of experience in the legal field related to the job responsibilities listed above, OR one to five years of experience performing standard administrative tasks such as preparing correspondence or reports, filing, entering data, receiving payments, and/or maintaining logs. This includes regular, proficient use of electronic management information systems, word processing, and other standard business software applications.
- Alternatively, an Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is acceptable.
- Exceptional administrative skills, including organization, time management, and attention to detail.
- Excellent grammar and proofreading skills.
- Clear and professional communication skills.
Salary Information:
The position of Legal Assistant at the State Public Defender's Office offers a full-time salary ranging from $52,000 to $73,000 annually, depending on experience (.). Additionally, the position is classified as hourly, with a pay rate ranging from to per hour.
