Job Title: Research Services Manager
Job Responsibilities:
The Research Services Manager at the law firm is responsible for managing all aspects of research service delivery to over 1,600 lawyers and staff. The position involves virtual management and mentoring of the firm's Research Services Team, ensuring successful management of staffing and scheduling needs. Key responsibilities include developing and administering performance expectations and standard workflow processes, monitoring and administering research request assignments through a research request tracking system, and providing resource and research strategy recommendations. The manager is also tasked with performing quality control oversight of work product, ensuring consistency in responses and timeliness of service delivery.
The role includes identifying opportunities for professional growth, facilitating skills development, and providing mentorship for team members. The manager is expected to generate and present regular reports on research activities, including metrics on service delivery and client satisfaction. Collaboration with the Research Services management team to identify and implement best practices in legal research is essential, as is working collaboratively with other teams in the Knowledge Management & Innovation Department to support the department’s mission and goals. The manager must effectively lead and communicate, delivering high-quality research solutions with exemplary customer service, ensuring that all research activities comply with firm policies, legal requirements, and industry best practices.
The manager is required to remain current on technological enhancements that contribute to providing sophisticated research services. This includes participating in testing, evaluating, and selecting new research tools and advising on the cancellation or reduction of existing tools. The manager must offer consistent training and updates to the team on new product developments and enhancements. Participation in professional associations and active engagement in professional programs and events are encouraged, as is promoting and upholding the highest professional and customer service standards. Maintaining confidential information is crucial, and travel may be required. Work may occasionally require after-hours and weekend coverage to perform essential duties.
Education and Experience Information:
The position requires a Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. A minimum of seven years of experience in legal research is required, along with a minimum of three years in a leadership or management role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ideal candidate should possess extensive knowledge of legal research tools, databases, and methodologies, with strong legal research skills, including proficiency in using legal research databases and tools. Knowledge and expertise with generative AI solutions, both general and legal research-related, are important. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, along with proven leadership and team management skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, a high level of integrity and professionalism, and strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy are essential. The candidate should be proactive and resourceful in addressing challenges, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability and commitment to work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders to achieve common goals and high-quality results are required, fostering a positive team environment within a large law firm environment. A positive approach to team collaboration and acting as a goodwill ambassador for the Knowledge Management and Innovation department when working with attorneys and other firm administrative departments is important. Substantive knowledge of the law and legal bibliography, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal research software, are necessary.
Salary Information:
The hiring salary range for the position is $150, to $170,. Compensation is dependent on several factors, such as position, location, education, training, and experience.
