Job Title: Early Assistance Advocate for Injured Employees (Ombudsman I)
Job Responsibilities:
An Early Assistance Advocate (Ombudsman I) plays a crucial role in assisting injured employees in Texas with their workers' compensation claims. The key responsibilities of this position include:
- Working closely with senior Ombudsmen to advocate for, assist, and educate injured employees.
- Utilizing early intervention strategies to assist injured employees before hearings.
- Providing one-on-one assistance to injured employees and answering their questions.
- Reviewing claims for medical and income benefits.
- Studying and analyzing case backgrounds for each claim.
- Gathering and evaluating information, including medical records and doctors' letters.
- Preparing and responding to requests for Designated Doctor examinations.
- Evaluating and implementing strategies to resolve claims early.
- Reporting and referring complaints.
- Tracking and providing information and claim status updates.
- Educating injured employees about the workers' compensation dispute process and relevant laws and rules.
- Advocating for the expedient resolution of claims by assembling necessary evidence for insurance carrier determinations or benefit proceedings.
- Contacting insurance carriers and medical providers to identify and resolve disputes.
- Assisting with referrals to social services from other state agencies.
- Providing assistance in filing claims and obtaining supporting documentation from doctors.
- Regularly contacting injured employees to provide status updates and discuss upcoming events.
- Documenting customer contact in the computer system.
- Answering general customer service questions.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the position of Early Assistance Advocate (Ombudsman I), candidates must meet the following education and experience requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
- One year of experience in claims management, insurance, casework, healthcare, social work, law office (paralegal/legal assistant), or workers’ compensation. Education and relevant experience may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
Additionally, candidates are expected to have knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated skills in assisting the public, conflict resolution, problem-solving, report writing, records maintenance, interpreting laws and regulations, data entry and retrieval, and customer service.
- Ability to use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, including injured employees and fellow staff members.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with all levels of employees and the public.
Salary Information:
The position of Early Assistance Advocate (Ombudsman I) is classified under State Job Code: 3660, Salary Admin Plan: B, Grade: 17. The salary is set at $3, per month. This position is exempt from overtime and is a full-time role requiring 40 hours per week, with a travel requirement of up to 25% of the time.
