Associate Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Associate Counsel will be responsible for defending lawsuits filed in New York courts and other first-party insurance defense cases. Key responsibilities include:
- Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
- Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
- Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath.
- Defending by trial or dispositive hearing, all matters assigned, as applicable.
Education and Experience Information:
- A Juris Doctor degree is required.
- Admission to the New York Bar is required.
- The candidate must have 2 to 6+ years of experience in litigation, specifically in insurance defense and/or personal injury.
- The candidate must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and meet licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Civil litigation experience.
- Insurance defense-related litigation experience.
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone, and through written correspondence/email.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
- Must document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner.
- Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organizational, priority-setting, and multi-tasking skills.
- Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information.
Salary Information:
The annual salary range for the position is $118, to $186,. The final salary offered will be determined based on factors including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education, training, work location, and market and business considerations.
Additional Information:
- The position is remote, with the company’s staff counsel located in Melville, NY, handling matters in Queens County.
- The company will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.
