Job Title: Director of Accounting
Job Responsibilities:
The Director of Accounting will be tasked with a variety of key responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation and integrity of the accounting functions within the law firm. These duties include:
- Developing and maintaining a documented system of accounting policies and procedures to ensure their consistent application while maintaining and strengthening internal controls.
- Managing all accounting operations such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Banking, Billing, Trust, Client Relations, and Collections.
- Providing support to the accounting staff on day-to-day tasks, including resolving escalated issues from staff.
- Ensuring that monthly bank account reconciliations for operating and trust accounts are completed accurately and timely, and that all pending transactions are updated.
- Overseeing the monitoring of unapplied and trust balances, as well as unbilled WIP.
- Regularly reconciling general ledger accounts, such as the A/R general ledger balance to detailed aging.
- Maintaining an appropriate chart of accounts to permit reporting by division.
- Maintaining a system of adequate internal controls over accounting transactions.
- Issuing timely, accurate, and complete financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and year-to-date) and ensuring quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
- Calculating and issuing financial and operating metrics relevant to the firm in a timely manner.
- Providing financial analyses as needed, particularly for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
- Coordinating the provision of information to external auditors for their review or audit of the firm’s financial statements on a regular (quarterly) basis.
- Coordinating the preparation of regulatory reporting and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings on a timely basis.
Education and Experience:
The preferred qualifications for the Director of Accounting position include:
- A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration, or equivalent business experience.
- CPA/CMA Certification is preferred but not required.
- Over 10 years of progressively responsible, combined accounting and finance experience, including proven working experience as a department-level Director.
