Job Title: Accountant
Job Responsibilities:
The Accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate financial recordkeeping, smooth day-to-day operations, and compliance with accounting standards. Key responsibilities include:
- Financial Recordkeeping & Reporting: Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. Track and report on the firm's profitability, expenses, and cash flow.
- Accounts Payable & Receivable: Process vendor invoices, expense reports, and firm payments. Manage client billing, including trust account reconciliations. Monitor accounts receivable, follow up on overdue payments, and assist with collections.
- Payroll & Tax Compliance: Process payroll, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. Assist with tax filings, including sales tax, payroll tax, and business tax returns. Work with external CPA firms for annual audits and tax preparation.
- Trust Accounting (IOLTA Compliance): Maintain and reconcile client trust accounts in compliance with legal accounting rules. Ensure proper handling of client funds and adherence to state bar regulations.
- Financial Systems & Process Improvement: Utilize accounting software (., QuickBooks, Xero, or legal-specific platforms) to streamline processes. Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies. Assist with financial software implementation and upgrades.
Education and Experience Information:
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. A CPA or CMA is a plus.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of accounting experience is required, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in QuickBooks (or similar), Excel (advanced functions), and legal billing software is a plus.
- Knowledge: An understanding of GAAP, trust accounting (IOLTA), and tax compliance is required.
- Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential.
- Communication: The ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, staff, and external vendors is important.
Preferred Experience (Not Required):
- Familiarity with property tax appeal processes or real estate accounting.
- Experience with legal trust accounting and compliance.
Salary Information:
- Compensation is competitive with a starting salary of $65,000, commensurate with experience.
- Benefits include 120 hours of PTO after a 90-day probation period, typically 17+ paid holidays per year, employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance premiums for the employee, and a 3% employer 401k contribution after one year of employment.
- The work environment is team-oriented, with a business casual dress code and exceptions based on assigned tasks.
- Annual performance reviews are conducted.
