Job Responsibilities:
The Legal Assistant, Lead is responsible for assisting attorneys by performing legal tasks that require a comprehensive understanding of legal procedures, methods, and terminology. This role involves training, assigning, and monitoring the work of others or providing guidance to less experienced co-workers. Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting attorneys with the management of routine case files.
- Preparing non-complex pleadings, documents, correspondence, and affidavits.
- Conducting basic research such as title searches, estate checks, asset location, and skip tracing.
- Reviewing files, mail, and standard legal documents to gather information and locate missing or incomplete records.
- Contacting clients, debtors, attorneys, and courts for further instructions, status updates, and additional information and documentation.
- Negotiating payment arrangements and sale or return of assets/collateral for attorney/client approval.
- Processing and following up on post-judgment executions.
- Confirming the service of subpoenas, notice of depositions, and other legal documents to witnesses and parties to action.
- Filing pleadings and documents with the court clerk, as directed.
- Monitoring hearing dockets and scheduling attorney coverage as needed.
- Forwarding accounts to out-of-town counsel and serving as a liaison between client and attorney.
- Arranging for payment of court costs, local counsel fees, publication costs, etc.
- Reviewing, notating, and distributing mail and incoming work to appropriate parties.
- Performing data entry to update notes on account.
- May take and process debtor payments.
- Maintaining current knowledge of general legal procedures, deadlines and procedures for appropriate documents, office equipment, and software in general use in the legal community.
- Completing all required training applicable to the assigned position.
- Performing additional duties as requested or required.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Legal Assistant position should possess the following qualifications:
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- 2 years of relevant office experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A paralegal certificate is considered a plus.
- A professional demeanor with clients and co-workers.
- Organizational and detail-oriented skills to meet deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office products with the ability to type 45 words per minute.
Salary Information:
The compensation and benefits for the Legal Assistant position include:
- A pay scale ranging from to per hour, plus a $2,000 Retention Bonus during the first year of employment.
