Job Title: Assistant District Attorney- Entry Level
Job Responsibilities:
Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) in the organization are integral to the legal process, tasked with several responsibilities aimed at ensuring justice and maintaining public safety. Upon joining the 2026 Fall Class, new ADAs undergo an intensive training program designed to equip them with the skills necessary to excel as prosecutors and litigators.
The training encompasses approximately six weeks and includes:
- Orientation to familiarize ADAs with the structure and operations of the organization.
- A comprehensive overview of case progression from inception through the court system.
- Instruction on local criminal court practices, including drafting accusatory instruments, setting plea parameters, conducting sentencings, hearings, and trials, as well as understanding ethical obligations.
- Education on New York Criminal Procedure law, New York Penal law, search and seizure laws, and suppression issues.
- Practical experience through shadowing colleagues in local criminal courts to apply learned concepts and skills.
Post-training, ADAs are assigned to one of the organization's seven branch offices. Under the supervision of a Branch Chief, they will:
- Manage their own caseloads.
- Draft motion responses.
- Participate in court proceedings.
- Conduct hearings and trials.
For ADAs with prior experience from other District Attorney's offices, a week-long onboarding and training program is provided. This program introduces them to the organization's structure and practices, focusing on ethics, data systems, discovery, and other specialized training crucial for their role in Westchester County.
ADAs are required to make a three-year commitment and serve at the discretion of the District Attorney.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must be citizens of the United States in accordance with New York State Public Officers Law Section 3(1). Additionally, New York State residency is required upon the commencement of employment.
