Job Title: Assistant Attorney General

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Attorney General (AAG) will serve in the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under the Criminal Justice Division. The primary responsibility of the AAG is to investigate incidents throughout New York State where a police officer or peace officer, including corrections officers, has caused a person's death. If the investigation warrants, the AAG will seek charges related to the incident and prosecute any resulting indictments. The AAG will collaborate with a team of experienced prosecutors, legal support staff, and detective investigators to uphold and strengthen public trust in the criminal justice system. The AAG will report to the Downstate Deputy Bureau Chief of OSI. Additional responsibilities may include working outside of normal business hours and traveling outside the county of employment as needed.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the AAG position must have at least six (6) years of experience in criminal prosecution and/or criminal defense, with substantial experience in homicide trials and investigations. Excellent legal writing and research skills are essential, along with strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and teamwork abilities. Prior experience investigating complex cases in the grand jury is advantageous, as is experience handling cases involving causation, justification, or complex felony prosecutions. Experience in working with diverse communities and conducting community outreach is also considered a plus. Applicants must be residents of or intend to become residents of New York State and must be admitted to practice law in New York State. Additionally, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two-year commitment upon hiring is a condition of employment.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant Attorney General position is $83,594 to $178,463, with an additional location pay of $2,000 to $4,000, which varies depending on the location.
