Job Title: Employment Law Section Deputy Attorney General III
Job Responsibilities:
The Employment Law Section of the Department of Justice is seeking a Deputy Attorney General III to handle complex civil employment cases. The responsibilities include:
- Independently managing all aspects of civil employment cases such as drafting and arguing motions, conducting and defending depositions, preparing for and handling trials, and managing expert discovery.
- Handling jury and bench trials, and contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board.
- Defending agency actions against petitions for writs of mandamus.
- Drafting appellate briefs and presenting arguments before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit.
- Obtaining work safety and gun violence restraining orders.
- Providing detailed case analyses and recommendations to clients.
- Offering training, guidance, and advice to state agencies on employment and personnel matters.
- Communicating effectively with judges, court staff, juries, and witnesses.
- Collaborating professionally and effectively with colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients.
- Managing a challenging workload and producing high-quality work product under tight deadlines.
- Serving as effective oral advocates in court settings.
- Exercising independent judgment on complex legal matters and handling litigation that may be appealed to higher courts.
- Providing research, analysis, and sound advice on complex legal matters to clients and public officials.
- Engaging in mediation and settlement negotiations, advising clients on litigation costs and risks.
- Performing various administrative functions including managing deadlines, case information, and training opportunities.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must be active members of the California State Bar and reside in California.
- Deputy Attorney General III requires five years of legal experience.
- Deputy Attorney General IV requires six years of legal experience, with one year at a level equivalent to Deputy Attorney General III.
- Deputy Attorney General V requires eight years of legal experience, with two years at a level equivalent to Deputy Attorney General IV.
Salary Information:
- Deputy Attorney General III: $10, - $14, per month.
- Deputy Attorney General IV: $11, - $15, per month.
- Deputy Attorney General V: $12, - $16, per month.
- New to State candidates will be hired at the starting HAM salary of the classification.
- The starting HAM salary for Deputy Attorney General III with 5 years of experience is $11,695.
- The starting HAM salary for Deputy Attorney General IV with 6+ years of experience is $12,925.
- The starting HAM salary for Deputy Attorney General V (lateral only) is $13,642.
The position offers a hybrid telework option and requires the ability to report to the office as needed.
