Job Description
The organization is a leader in creatively and effectively engaging with individuals under court-mandated community supervision. Through partnerships with people and organizations, the organization provides opportunities for those on probation to access services and opportunities that positively impact their life trajectory. Utilizing the best current data on "what works," staff at the organization engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism.
The organization is seeking to hire one Agency Attorney to serve as an Associate General Counsel who will report to the General Counsel. Under direction, with wide latitude for independent judgment and unreviewed action and decision, the individual will work in the General Law Unit. The responsibilities of the Associate General Counsel include but are not limited to:
- Conducting legal research and providing legal guidance to personnel on a range of operations such as liability and risk assessments and analysis, enforcement and administration of acts, rules, laws, and regulations.
- Negotiating, drafting, reviewing, and processing complex or highly technical memoranda of understanding, contracts, leases, and other agreements.
- Reviewing and drafting complex, important, or highly technical policies, procedures, and operational documents.
- Recommending statutory and regulatory revisions related to agency issues.
- Researching and preparing briefs, legal opinions, affidavits, and memoranda of law.
- Responding to Subpoenas and Freedom of Information Law requests.
- Preparing position statements in response to Charges of Discrimination filed with federal, state, and local governmental entities.
- Acting as a liaison with Agency executives and other governmental bodies and law enforcement officials.
- Serving as liaison to the New York City Law Department on litigation matters.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III, candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

- Excellent legal writing skills are required.
- Outstanding communication skills
- Strong legal research skills
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Legal case management database experience
