Job Title: Sustainability Enforcement Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Sustainability Enforcement Attorney plays a crucial role in the Department of Buildings' efforts to implement and enforce New York City's climate policies, especially Local Law 97, which aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the city's largest buildings. The attorney will be engaged in several key responsibilities, including:
- Managing all aspects of legal case work, from initial research to case strategy development, case tracking, pre-trial settlements, and case prosecution at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH).
- Preparing detailed reports and analyses regarding cases and enforcement processes.
- Aiding in the collection of assessed penalties and fines and promoting mediated resolutions.
- Collaborating with Sustainability Bureau staff to ensure effective enforcement and compliance with climate regulations.
- Conducting in-depth legal research and drafting legal memoranda.
- Assisting the Senior Sustainability Enforcement Counsel in supervising and monitoring workflow and potentially providing guidance and training to other attorneys and attorney interns.
- Completing special projects and assignments as needed.
Education and Experience Information:
- Admission to the New York State Bar is required.
- Candidates must have either one year of satisfactory legal experience in the United States subsequent to admission to any state bar, or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Intern.
- To qualify for Assignment Level II, candidates need one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of similar legal experience after bar admission in relevant legal areas.
- For Assignment Level III, two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience after bar admission in relevant areas is necessary.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in adjudication, prosecution, or defense at OATH.
- Strong writing, legal research, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and work both independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
- Experience with Building Code and laws related to sustainable buildings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, West Law, and other relevant software.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Sustainability Enforcement Attorney position is between $83, and $95, annually.
