Job Title: Attorney-Adviser (General)

Job Responsibilities:
- The primary responsibility of the Attorney-Adviser (General) is to litigate cases before administrative and judicial forums such as the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and Federal courts.
- Develops and maintains expertise in Federal Government Administrative and Employment law to provide advice, guidance, counseling, and training to clients regularly.
- Conducts all phases of litigation, including discovery, motions practice, administrative hearings (bench trials), settlements, and appeals.
- Identifies agency interests, facts, and relevant issues; conducts thorough legal research and applies the law insightfully to draw sound legal conclusions and solutions.
- Practices preventative law to aid clients in policy development in multiple areas, such as military and civilian pay law, military retired pay law, tax law, bankruptcy law, and fiscal law.
- Advises senior leadership officials of litigation risks and settlement recommendations and engages in settlement negotiations both inside and outside formal mediations and settlement conferences.
- Provides suggestions and recommendations for process improvement.
- Renders opinions on legal problems involving complex issues with little or no legal precedents and makes recommendations for action.
- Conducts complex meetings and/or special projects.

Education and Experience Information:
- Assignments require the first professional law degree (. or .) and active membership in the bar of the highest court of a State, . commonwealth, . territory, or the District of Columbia.
- The attorney must have professional legal experience in excess of 2 years that is commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Salary Information:
- The salary range for the Attorney-Adviser (General) position is $106,365 to $138,276 per year.
- The position is classified under the GS-13 pay scale and grade.

Additional Information:
- This position is in the excepted service, filled by an alternative hiring process, and is not in the competitive civil service.
- The position is located in the DFAS Office of General Counsel, Administrative and Employment Law and Litigation.
- Telework availability is limited and will only be provided on a rare case-by-case basis where Agency Leadership has determined that telework serves a compelling DoD need.
- The position requires . citizenship, and a favorable suitability review and security clearance as a condition of employment.
- The position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not covered by a bargaining unit.
- The travel requirement is seldom (1-24%).
- Moving expenses will be paid, and relocation expenses may be reimbursed in accordance with agency policy.
- Employment of retired Federal employees receiving an annuity is subject to Department of Defense policy guidance.
