Job Title: Associate Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Associate Counsel will be responsible for defending lawsuits filed in New York courts and handling other first-party insurance defense. The role involves working with the company's staff counsel in Melville, NY, to manage legal matters in Suffolk County. Key responsibilities include:
- Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
- Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the claims department.
- Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath.
- Defending assigned matters by trial or dispositive hearing.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Hold a Juris Doctor degree (REQUIRED).
- Have 2 to 6+ years of experience in litigation, specifically in insurance defense and/or personal injury (REQUIRED).
- Be admitted to the New York Bar (REQUIRED).
- Be licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and meet mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.
- Possess civil litigation experience and insurance defense-related litigation experience (PREFERRED).
- Be able to communicate professionally in person, via telephone, and through written correspondence/email.
- Be capable of traveling as required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
- Be proficient in documenting files clearly and concisely for understanding by customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees.
- Be adept at following complex instructions, resolving conflicts, and possessing strong organizational, priority-setting, and multi-tasking skills.
- Be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information.
Salary Information:
The annual salary range for this position is between $118, and $186,. The final salary offered will be determined based on several factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate's work experience, education, training, work location, as well as market and business considerations.
