Job Title: Associate Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Associate Counsel position involves defending lawsuits filed in New York courts and handling other first-party insurance defense matters. The role requires the candidate to conduct legal research and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda. The Associate Counsel will render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department. Responsibilities also include preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, which encompasses depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath. The Associate Counsel will be responsible for defending all assigned matters by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable.
Education and Experience Information:
The position requires a Juris Doctor degree and admission to the New York Bar. Candidates must have 2 to 6+ years of experience in litigation, particularly in insurance defense and/or personal injury. The candidate must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable. The candidate must also be able to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences. Additionally, the candidate must be able to document files clearly and concisely in a professional written manner, follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organizational, priority-setting, and multi-tasking skills. The ability to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications for the Associate Counsel position include civil litigation experience and insurance defense-related litigation experience. The candidate must be able to communicate professionally in person, via tele,.
