Job Title: Business Development Manager
Job Responsibilities:
The Business Development Manager (BDM) at the law firm is tasked with optimizing the client journey to drive revenue growth through key client relationships. The BDM is responsible for ensuring a positive client experience to foster continued growth and retention. This role involves close partnership with the Legal Operations team and select Client Relationship Managers (CRMs) to coordinate with legal and administrative team leads on a variety of shared services. The BDM serves as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, leveraging strong industry and firm knowledge to ensure client development and retention. Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as a trusted advisor and first point of contact for attorneys in Healthcare, Life Sciences, and Education sectors for all business development activities.
- Proactively identifying business development opportunities and educating attorneys on the firm's offerings and value proposition.
- Evaluating, managing, and executing pitch, proposal, and RFP opportunities in collaboration with the Proposal Team and BD Specialist.
- Collaborating with Marketing & Design teams to enhance and maintain marketing materials for strategic business units (SBUs).
- Overseeing key client and prospect events in collaboration with the Events team.
- Creating and maintaining an accurate database of experience for the SBU using firm intelligence software.
- Leading priority practice and working groups, and partnering with practice group leaders to manage and execute business plans.
- Ensuring SBU initiatives and campaigns are executed in alignment with the overall firm strategy, in partnership with Marketing teams.
- Supporting SBU leadership in onboarding and integrating lateral hires.
- Preparing for industry conferences in collaboration with attorneys and Marketing teams, fulfilling sponsorship obligations, providing client and prospect intelligence, and evaluating ROI.
- Providing insights on firm clients, competitor intelligence, financials, and prospective clients to attorneys, in partnership with Research Services and Financial Reporting teams.
- Managing the production process for blogs, client alerts, and other external communications.
- Managing and mentoring BD Specialists.
- Assisting in firmwide training efforts, including co-conducting business development workshops.
- Handling special projects as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- A 4-year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications, or a related field is required, or a combination of education and commensurate work experience.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in marketing and business development, preferably within a professional services firm or related organization, is required.
- At least 5 years of management experience in a related field is preferred.
- The role requires strong business development abilities, including setting priorities, planning, organization, follow-through, delegation, and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to build, manage, and track budgets and analyze ROI.
- The ability to motivate attorneys to engage in business development and to work with them to develop and implement business development plans is essential.
- Experience in providing a high level of client service to individuals at all levels of an organization is required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary, with the ability to write and produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports, and client-facing presentation materials.
- The candidate must be forward-thinking with proven ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges.
- A high level of maturity and confidence is necessary to interact with sophisticated internal and external clients.
- Excellent computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Adobe Creative Suite, and Internet research tools, are required. Knowledge of InterAction CRM software is preferred.
Salary Information:
Compensation for the Business Development Manager position at the law firm is commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation ranges for this position in various states and jurisdictions are as follows:
- State of California: $111,000 - $211,000
- State of Colorado: $102,000 - $182,000
- State of Illinois: $100,000 - $194,000
- State of Massachusetts: $111,000 - $211,000
- State of Maryland: $107,000 - $163,000
- State of Minnesota: $111,000 - $183,000
- Jersey City, NJ: $120,000 - $218,000
- State of New York: $103,000 - $223,000
- State of Vermont: $109,000 - $210,000
- State of Washington: $107,000 - $204,000
- Washington, .: $143,000 - $210,000
These salary ranges do not include a discretionary bonus, which is non-guaranteed and dependent on individual and firm performance.
