### Job Responsibilities
The Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) role in the Southern District of Texas involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at enforcing federal law and ensuring justice. The AUSA will join the Department of Justice's mission to enforce federal law, defend the interests of the United States, seek just punishment for the guilty, and ensure impartial justice for all Americans. Specific responsibilities include:
- Litigating a broad range of civil cases on behalf of the United States in federal court.
- Handling land condemnation matters and related cases involving the border with Mexico.
- Engaging in frequent courtroom appearances and managing a fast-paced, challenging, and varied caseload.
- Working as part of a team in the Civil Division to enforce federal civil laws that protect life, liberty, and property.
- As experience and training progress, responsibilities will increase and civil assignments may become more complex.
The position may require occasional travel, with an average expectation of 1 to 5 nights per month.
### Education and Experience Information
#### Education
- Applicants must possess a Juris Doctor (.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Must be an active member of the bar in any . jurisdiction.
#### Experience
- Applicants must have at least one year of . legal or other relevant experience.
- Preferred experience includes strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, high-volume courtroom experience, and first-chair jury trial experience.
- Applicants should demonstrate outstanding organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service.
- Successful candidates should be computer proficient, capable of conducting their own legal research and writing, and self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings.
### Salary Information
The salary for the Assistant United States Attorney position is administratively determined based on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is $63,163 to $165,209, not including locality pay. The Department of Justice also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.
### Additional Information
This position is open to . Citizens, Nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the . Applicants must be United States Citizens or Nationals and must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof, as per 28 . 545.
All initial attorney positions at the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month temporary basis, pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation. The position is located in Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Laredo, or McAllen, Texas.
