Legal Aid Chicago is seeking a full-time paralegal to join our Medical-Legal Partnerships team. The position is based at our office in downtown Chicago and reports to a Supervisory Attorney. Job Title: Paralegal - Medical-Legal Partnerships

Salary and Benefits:

- Starting salary of $41,500 with annual increases based on relevant experience
- Eligibility for additional stipend for bilingual paralegals
- Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, parental leave, retirement plan, and more
- Eligibility for federal public service loan forgiveness program

Responsibilities:

- Conduct interviews with eligible clients on a wide range of legal issues, both over the phone and on-site at hospitals or health clinics
- Maintain an individual caseload with a focus on assisting clients with issues at the Social Security Administration, Illinois Department of Human Services, and other state agencies that administer public benefits
- Attend trainings to stay updated on relevant areas of law
- Develop understanding of health-harming legal issues affecting our patient/client population
- Collaborate with Legal Aid Chicago staff to provide comprehensive legal services
- Work with medical teams to support the MLP service model
- Maintain case files and accurate timekeeping in electronic case management system
- Maintain ethical standards of conduct required of attorneys
- Provide litigation support for attorneys and assist with administrative tasks as needed
- Track data and prepare reports related to our work and grant administration
- Engage in community outreach, provide legal training and education to health partners, and assist with data collection and reporting
- Maintain proficiency with necessary equipment, computer hardware, and software
- Handle other duties as assigned by Supervisory Attorneys and leadership team

Requirements:

- Preferred applicants will have an undergraduate degree and familiarity with public benefits program eligibility criteria
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Highly developed organizational skills
- Ability to work well with teams and independently
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Experience and commitment to interacting with people living in poverty, trauma survivors, and people with disabilities
- Spanish proficiency is a plus

Legal Aid Chicago offers a hybrid work environment and our office is ADA accessible with convenient access to public transportation and local expressways. This position will require travel to hospitals and may include travel for court or educational/outreach events.
