Keep an eye on the new people to see if they are fitting in and if they are not giving them some help.

Every day here feels like the best wholesome days back in college when you just sat down and had study groups with your friends.

Just like how some people didn't fit in back in college some people just won't be able to work here.

I would of liked to see this firm bring back some of the senior attorneys that originally left and kick to the curb some of the younger attorneys that had an attitude and did not get along with some of our senior members.

Everyone is treated very fairly and the front desk staff is very helpful. My secretary in particular was top notch and was always there for me when I needed her help. The benefits were outstanding as well.

Unfortunately too much change took place after management decided to go ahead and hire a bunch of new attorneys. It seems as though most of the senior level attorneys left, since the new attorneys and the senior attorneys with more experience disagreed on a lot of things (pertaining to how to do certain things within the legal field). Since then, it became more difficult to get help since our more experienced attorneys had left.

Hiring Criteria

Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

Although grades and school matter in Schulte's selection process, journal experience and clerkships are a major plus. Personality also counts a lot. It recruits hard working, intelligent, honest, and decent people.

SRZ hires from a variety of New York law schools, as well as other national law schools, with a special emphasis on NYU, Columbia, and Harvard. For lateral hires, Schulte concentrates on work experience. The firm has plenty of junior level associates.

Pro bono

SRZ wants its attorneys take professional responsibility to handle pro bono matters. It works for creating and sustaining an environment that encourages pro bono service in each of its practice areas. Its partners, associates and summer associates share their knowledge and time with organizations that represent the elderly, the indigent and the disenfranchised.

The firm's attorneys handle pro bono matters for organizations such as Human Rights First, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, the Federal District Court's Civil Indigent and Criminal Justice Panels, Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens, Partners in Health, Appleseed Foundation, and Lawyers Alliance for New York and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. SRZ attorneys are associated with and counsel legal aid organizations and have received awards for their pro bono service.

The firm does not distinguish in any respect between pro bono cases and other firm matters, and its attorneys have handled many significant matters for pro bono clients.

Through its involvement with Legal Outreach, Inc., over the past eight summers SRZ has week-long internships providing junior high school minority students with a range of legal experiences.

The firm also strongly encourages participation on bar association committees and reimburses associates for half of two bar association membership fees.

Summer associate program

SRZ summer associate program helps associates make intellectual and professional development. The summer program is designed to provide them with a realistic sense of practicing law. Throughout the summer, attorneys involve summer associates as much as possible in their matters and consider them part of the team.

Training includes writing seminars, a corporate negotiation workshop, a trial advocacy program, and a pro bono week. Its social events acclimatize them to the firm's environs and the life in New York City.

As an accredited provider of continuing legal education in New York, the firm offered 146 CLE programs last year. In 2010, Schulte Roth & Zabel had a class of 31 summer associates. Twenty of those summer associates were considered for offers and 20 offers were made.

Nationally-recognized experts teach workshops on topics ranging from general skills like contract drafting, brief writing, negotiation and deposition skills, to business topics, and to leadership and business development. In addition, each department offers its own seminars to give the junior lawyers more specialized expertise and keep all lawyers abreast of the latest developments in practice areas.

Associates are directly involved in all aspects of a project, including the client's views and goals, so that they can mature quickly.

Attorneys are encouraged to attend outside seminars sponsored by bar associations and private continuing legal education providers. The firm pays all costs incurred to attend approved continuing legal education programs.

Mentoring is an integral part of the training process at SRZ. The firm understands that effective mentoring is essential for the development and satisfaction of associates, and that mentoring is needed at every stage of an associate's career. It believes that mentoring should cover a variety of issues, ranging from the sharing of a knowledge base and practice tips to advice regarding an associate's long-term career plans; there is a formal mentoring program that pairs junior associates with more senior associate mentors and allows mid-level and senior associates to select partner mentors.
