Advice to law firm management: Consider the culture and the management structure. The culture has suffered as the firm has grown. Also local management should have more power to decide office-wide hires to help keep the culture stable. National management often sees only numbers and does not see the long-term picture.

Pros: There are some very good attorneys who are also very good people in individual offices. Getting in with the right group in the office you are in is key. You will have to interview the attorneys as much as be interviewed by them if you are considering a position here.

Cons: Firm has grown really quickly and may be growing for growth's sake, without regard to the impact on culture. Some of the national management lack understanding of the local markets, and lack people skills.

Partners to Avoid and Why: This is a national firm. There is no way to list partners who should be avoided. Just know that some are micro managers and some cannot delegate work. It depends on the office you are in.

Favorite Things About this Firm: The people I worked with were generally very nice. Many are really smart as well. National firms do pay better in many markets than local or regional firms.

We do not take a "cookie-cutter" approach. We look for the most expedient ways to address each client's particular legal issues. In a very real sense, we are "lawyers' lawyers" – we have represented seven of the largest law firms in Michigan when they have had legal issues. This says a lot about our reputation and record of success. We have avoided unrestrained expansion in favor of maintaining a close-knit working group. We put matters under direct control of experienced attorneys, n...
