Advice to law firm management: I would like to see management step up to the plate and spread the work load out more appropriately. Perhaps they could work on taking fewer cases.

Pros: The starting pay was excellent and I found the front desk staff to be very friendly and helpful as well. I also enjoyed the cases that we worked on during my brief stay at this firm.

Cons: I thought that there was too many personality clashes in the office and I also found the hours to be very stressful (overburdened) at times as well.

Advice to law firm management: This firm needs to consider paying their employees more. Otherwise they will leave to another place of business and make more money elsewhere.

Pros: Management at this firm is really great. They help train you when you start and are always there to answer any questions you may have. Their office door is always open and they always set aside time to speak with employees and value what we have to say.

Cons: The only problem with this firm is the pay. When starting out it is fine but they rarely give out any raises, even to employees who have worked here for years. It makes it tough to work harder when the pay is being stuck the same.

Dickinson Wright has a proud history of client service and a longstanding tradition of excellence. From our founding in Detroit in 1878 by two young lawyers, Henry Monroe Campbell and Henry Russel, the firm has evolved and flourished by maintaining a focus on the client while staying on the leading edge of legislative and technological developments. Our commitment to excellence and client service is evidenced by our long-term client relationships. We have worked with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company since the late 1800s and with Chrysler Corporation since it was organized in the 1920s. Our association with both Ford Motor Company and National Bank of Detroit, which now is JPMorgan Chase Bank, spans eight decades. Throughout the years, Dickinson Wright has been involved in a number of historically-significant events. Members of the firm were involved in drafting the state of Michigan’s two constitutions in 1908 and 1963. After President Roosevelt closed banks nationwide in 1933, Dickinson Wright was instrumental in helping to organize a new national bank in Detroit. Dickinson Wright has the honor of representing leading industrial, financial, insurance, emerging technology and service enterprises around the world. On the legislative front, Dickinson Wright has drafted several significant statutes, including the Michigan Financial Institutions Act of 1937, the Intangibles Tax Act, the Industrial Facilities Tax Act of 1974 and the Community Property Tax Act of 1948. Numerous members of Dickinson Wright have been appointed or elected to the judiciary. As of January 1, 2013, three of the seven justices of the Michigan Supreme Court began their legal careers at Dickinson Wright and became members of our firm. As the firm grew and evolved, its name changed several times to reflect changes in leadership. In 1998, the firm became Dickinson Wright PLLC. In 2011, the firm’s Ontario affiliate, Dickinson Wright LLP, grew through a combination with Toronto-based Aylesworth LLP, a firm that has been serving clients with distinction since 1861. In 2012, Dickinson Wright expanded again with the additions of new offices in Columbus, Ohio and Saginaw, Michigan. At the beginning of 2013, our Phoenix office combined with Phoenix-based Mariscal, Weeks, McIntyre & Friedlander, P.A., with over 60 attorneys, Phoenix is the firm's largest office outside the Detroit area. Dickinson Wright continues to grow where opportunities to serve our clients arise. In 2015, Dickinson Wright opened its Lexington, Kentucky office to strengthen the firm's regional reach with plans to expand in the future. From a two-person firm serving Detroit-based clients, Dickinson Wright has evolved into a leading global law firm. With approximately 400 lawyers across more than 40 practice areas, Dickinson Wright serves clients from offices in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw and Troy, Michigan; Las Vegas, Nevada; Columbus, Ohio; Lexington, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Phoenix, Arizona; Washington, D.C.; and Toronto, Ontario. We’ve worked with clients on six continents and our global presence continues to expand.

Dickinson Wright is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace and is a recognized leader among law firms for our diversity initiatives. For decades, Dickinson Wright has been a pioneer in all aspects of diversity - both within the firm and in the communities where we do business. From the associate level up to management, we are committed to recruiting and supporting diverse candidates. We know that a diverse team enables us to offer our clients a variety of mindsets when approaching complex legal issues.

Summer associate program

Dickinson Wright maintains a 10-week summer program that combines high-quality client work, professional activities outside the office and fun, often unique, social activities. Our summer associates participate fully in our sophisticated and diverse legal practice, and they gain realistic insight into life at our firm and the lives of the diverse lawyers who make up Dickinson Wright.

The program is designed primarily for second-year law students, although first-year students (and to a lesser extent), third-year students, sometimes also participate. The program is carefully structured and administered to provide a supportive environment geared toward success because we want every summer associate to earn and accept an offer to become a Dickinson Wright associate. We view the Summer Associate Program as key to our goal to identify and attract the most highly qualified law students, who will drive the firm's strategic growth.

The Summer Associate Program is run by a "Summer Team," led by the chair of our Recruitment Committee together with two assignment coordinators and two social coordinators. Each summer associate is assigned two formal mentors (one member and one associate).

Summer associates complete high-quality writing assignments that can span nearly every department in the law firm - from commercial, appellate and employment litigation, to corporate finance, real estate, bankruptcy and intellectual property. Summer associates also participate in "real world" lawyer experiences, such as attending deal closings, strategic meetings with clients, depositions, trials and arbitrations to provide an understanding of the work they will perform if they continue their career at Dickinson Wright.

We do not take a "cookie-cutter" approach. We look for the most expedient ways to address each client's particular legal issues. In a very real sense, we are "lawyers' lawyers" – we have represented seven of the largest law firms in Michigan when they have had legal issues. This says a lot about our reputation and record of success. We have avoided unrestrained expansion in favor of maintaining a close-knit working group. We put matters under direct control of experienced attorneys, n...
