The firm seeks bright, talented students from diverse law schools across the country. Students with excellent academic records and who are among the top in their classes are preferred. Candidates for summer associate positions must be attending an ABA-accredited law school in the United States In addition the student must possess strong communication skills that include excellent verbal and written skills. Leadership experiences are also considered, along with journal and moot court involvement. Candidates must demonstrate a strong desire to excel in a large law firm environment.
The firm believes that drawing and retaining quality talent is what makes the firm successful. The firm offers a competitive salary and rewards contributions to its clients. The firm's compensation package is divided into two parts: base salary and bonus. Yearly salary increments and bonus distribution are based on individual performance, growth and development. Associates are also eligible for productivity, cash and merit bonuses. Judicial clerks and incoming first-year associates who have passed the patent bar prior to joining the firm earn a signing bonus.

Arent Fox's commitment to pro bono is a value that is a legacy that dates from the firms founding 70 years ago. Its founding fathers believed that community service and pro bono public interest work were integral parts of the practice of law and ensured that the poor and needy have access to justice was a firm priority.
The firm encourages it lawyers to source pro bono work in their work areas and actively involve themselves in it. More than three-fourths of the firm's do pro bono work each year, and last year, each lawyer averaged more than 45 hours of pro bono work, together, the firm contributed nearly 18,000 pro bono hours. The firm allows each associate to receive credit for at least 150 hours of pro bono work per year. After 150 hours, associates can receive additional billable credit for pro bono matters.
The firm has contributed its legal muscle to matters as varied as death penalty cases, a class action case against the Department of Agriculture on behalf of women farmers, court cases on behalf of women's groups on domestic violence and privacy issues, and immigrant rights cases, and providing legal assistance to veterans in need.

The program is designed in a manner to ensure that the students perform legal work that is as close to the real experience as possible and apprises them of the working ethos of the firm.
The students also receive widespread training and appropriate feedbacks that help them to abet their strengths and addresses their weaknesses. Social events provide ample opportunities to socialize with the attorneys and get to them know them on a personal level. The student's summer experience is geared to provide the summer associates with as realistic a view of the life at Arent Fox as possible.
Mid-level associates called monitors direct summer associates' workflow. Students are given assignments, as far as possible, in their stated areas of preference by the monitors, who assign the projects after consultations with the firm's lawyers. Summer associates participate in a legal writing clinic and a two-day deposition workshop. The firm asks its lawyers to involve summer associates in "live" projects such as negotiations, depositions, hearings or closings.
Social events are held in a casual relaxed atmosphere and include concerts, cooking classes, sailing trip, sporting events and wine-tastings.
