JOB TITLE: Paralegal

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Paralegal at the law firm assists with substantive legal work for which an attorney is responsible and addresses the day-to-day needs of the attorney(s) they are assigned to. The role involves maintaining an annual billable hour goal of 1,440 hours for full-time paralegals and tracking both billable and non-billable hours. Paralegals are responsible for communicating with attorneys and clients to take instructions, obtain information, report on the status of matters, and support legal actions. They work with attorneys to draft and prepare all documentation required for various types of transactions as assigned and, in some instances, handle clerical work in preparing documents.

Paralegals are tasked with organizing, maintaining, reviewing, summarizing, and analyzing documents and records, compiling information, and recommending courses of action. They must be familiar with locating and obtaining Circuit and Magistrate Court records and develop and maintain knowledge of statutes, court decisions, and customs relating to legal procedures and practices in appropriate areas of law, including filing procedures in all required states. Paralegals prepare and oversee status checklists, assist attorneys in the preparation of filings pertaining to specific areas of law, request and gather copies of documents from various sources, and conduct investigations as necessary. Other duties and projects may be assigned as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INFORMATION:

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in legal studies or a related field. Candidates should have the ability to perform legal research, interview witnesses and document findings, organize large volumes of diverse materials, draft complex documents, and analyze legal documents for accuracy. They should also be able to recognize legal/technical issues and effectively recommend courses of action. An in-depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles is required, along with basic computer skills.

Preferred candidates will have prior law firm experience, be detail-oriented, exercise good judgment, and be able to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment. They should have the ability to prioritize and work under tight schedules, be able to travel based on client demands, and work overtime as needed to meet deadlines.
