Job Title: Legal CPS Regional Attorney III
Job Responsibilities:
The Legal CPS Regional Attorney III is tasked with providing direct representation in court for Child Protective Services (CPS) in legal cases, offering expertise, guidance, and instruction in family law, civil litigation, and agency policy. The attorney is responsible for monitoring the progress of all **Members Only** court cases within their assigned area and ensuring their timely and appropriate resolution. The position involves routine interaction with caseworkers, supervisors, program directors, program administrators, agency attorneys, county and district attorneys, opposing counsel, judges, agency clients, witnesses, community professionals, expert witnesses, protective services clients, and the general public. Some essential job functions include:
- Advising staff on legal matters and interpreting laws, regulations, and policies.
- Advising county and district attorneys on legal matters.
- Providing agency representation in court cases.
- Preparing cases for trial and handling the trial in most cases.
- Providing legal training to agency staff and the legal community.
- Coordinating specialized legal efforts with appropriate experts.
- Preparing or supervising the preparation of legal opinions, briefs, legal pleadings, and reports.
- Performing other duties as assigned and required to maintain unit operations.
- Assisting in formulating, establishing, and coordinating office systems.
- Promoting, monitoring, and ensuring respect for cultural diversity.
- Attending work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, maintaining good standing with the State Bar of Texas. The position requires work experience in Family Law or Child Welfare Law. The attorney must possess knowledge of family law and civil practice, with the ability to synthesize the law, administrative rules, agency policies, and best practice recommendations to reach an appropriate interpretation. The ability to convey complex legal ideas and instructions clearly to staff, and develop and maintain professional working relationships with agency staff and the legal community is essential.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Legal CPS Regional Attorney III position is $6, to $8, per month. The position is full-time, exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and not eligible for telework. Travel may be required up to 50% of the time.
