Job Title: Director, Rikers Island Sex Crimes Prosecution Initiative
Job Responsibilities:
The Director of the Rikers Island Sex Crimes Prosecution Initiative (RISCPI) will be responsible for leading and overseeing a team that investigates and prosecutes sexual offenses occurring on Rikers Island. The Director will report to the Rikers Island Prosecution Bureau Chief, the Investigations Division Chief, and the Deputy Division Chief. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing, supervising, and directing all investigations and prosecutions conducted by RISCPI.
- Motivating, organizing, and directing RISCPI staff to perform their duties competently and with integrity at both the main office and the satellite office on Rikers Island.
- Gathering and preserving statistics regarding investigations and cases worked on within the Rikers Island Prosecution Bureau.
- Maintaining current knowledge of investigative methods and proper application of relevant law, including Criminal Procedure Law Article 245.
- Participating in meetings and conferences between the District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement agencies and organizations.
- Training staff in relevant federal and state statutory law and case law for criminal procedure and penal law.
- Conducting and/or participating in SORA hearings throughout the Investigations Division.
- Advising and assisting legal and non-legal staff in handling their assigned cases and duties.
- Conducting in-depth case reviews and conferences regularly.
- Implementing Office policies as directed.
- Communicating clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Maintaining solid relationships with the New York City Department of Correction and Investigations, and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Performing other duties as required.
- Being available nights, weekends, and holidays.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctorate degree is required.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience is necessary, with at least 12 months in a managerial role.
- In-depth knowledge of the PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) legislation.
- Active and good standing in the New York State Bar.
- US Citizenship and New York State Residency are required as of the first day of employment.
- Significant experience conducting and overseeing criminal investigations and prosecutions, including evidence-based cases.
- Significant grand jury and trial experience.
- Experience in developing and managing complex investigations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Strong business planning and forecasting skills.
- Strong legal writing skills.
- Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Excellent presentation and organizational skills.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and strong ethics.
- Excellent people skills and demeanor.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to solve complex issues arising from investigations and case management problems professionally and fairly.
- Knowledge of NYS courts and the criminal justice system.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $180, – $198,.
