Job Title: Income Tax Manager, State and Local Tax
Job Responsibilities:
Research:
- Identify complex situations requiring research and outline the issues and sources for research.
- Analyze researched facts and sources before composing detailed research reports.
- Develop relationships with in-state and out of state Department of Tax/Department of Revenue personnel.
Tax Compliance:
- Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns, identifying significant state tax issues.
- Compose responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
- Provide assistance with exam support.
Tax Consulting:
- Draft tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.
- Apply state tax consulting sub-specialties and confer with other professionals as needed.
- Determine tax planning processes and ensure tax engagement letters are adopted before starting work.
- Assist in developing consultative selling strategies and manage client expectations.
Tax Controversy:
- Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues.
Tax Related Software:
- Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other software for task completion.
Tax Specialization:
- Provide technical client service to multi-state companies with state and local tax issues.
- Conduct negotiation of settlements, voluntary disclosure agreements, and state tax audit representation.
- Draft technical memoranda on state and local tax issues.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109:
- Prepare tax accrual workpapers.
ASC740-10:
- Understand and apply industry standards and firm policies related to FAS 109, FIN48, and FAS5 for sales tax and unclaimed properties.
Strategy Development:
- Review tax implication studies to identify alternative actions to benefit clients.
- Develop new ideas to advance client positions, reduce taxes or expenses, or offer non-tax benefits.
- Assist in researching potential tax strategies and suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise the workload of Senior Associates and Associates on engagements and review work products.
- Ensure training on relevant tax software for Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
- Evaluate performance and assist in developing professional development goals for Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
- Provide performance feedback and complete evaluations.
- Act as a Career Advisor to Senior Associates and Associates, as appropriate.
Education and Experience Information:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or relevant field required.
- Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or . preferred.
Experience:
- Over five years of experience in state and local/multistate taxation required.
- Experience supervising tax professionals on projects or engagements required.
- Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
- Experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred.
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.
- Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
