Job Responsibilities
Position Summary
The law firm is seeking a Litigation Paralegal to join its expanding practice. The role involves researching law, investigating facts, and preparing documents to assist attorneys. The Litigation Paralegal will independently research and analyze legal sources such as statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes. This research supports the preparation of legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, and appeals, for review and use by attorneys. The paralegal may also manage work assignments for multiple paralegals and serve as a key client contact.
Essential Functions
- Conducts legal research and investigates facts to assist attorneys with legal matters.
- Summarizes legal documents for attorneys.
- Organizes and indexes case files for easy access and retrieval.
- Determines deadlines and manages the calendar to ensure timely actions.
- Performs a variety of legal research and data compilation tasks.
- Files pleadings with the court clerk.
- Prepares reports, correspondence, declarations, and complaints.
- Drafts a variety of legal documents.
- Prepares affidavits or other documents and maintains document files.
- Prepares for mediations and trials, assisting attorneys throughout the process.
- Assists attorneys in preparation for depositions.
- Communicates with witnesses and experts to gather necessary information.
- Manages scheduling for various legal proceedings.
- Enters billing and expense data into the firm's system in a timely manner.
Education and Experience Information
- Paralegal certification or degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of paralegal experience or a combination of paralegal and legal secretary experience is required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and legal research tools such as Lexis-Nexis and WestLaw, is essential.
- Familiarity with document management systems and expense and billing systems is also required.
Salary Information
In accordance with California’s amended labor code as stated in Senate Bill 1162, the expected salary range for this position in California is between $76,000 and $85,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors as permitted by law.
