Job Title: Staff Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney/Agency Attorney III at the **Members Only** is tasked with a variety of responsibilities within the Hearings Division. Key duties include adjudicating a wide range of administrative hearings where individuals and businesses contest charges of violating City laws related to health, safety, and environmental protection. The attorney assists in managing the legal operations of the office, which encompasses ensuring the quality and consistency of legal decisions, coordinating daily assignments of Judicial Hearing Officers, and performing legal reviews and other administrative tasks. The role involves maintaining procedural systems to ensure cases are heard in a timely manner and decisions are rendered promptly. The attorney is also responsible for handling special projects and assignments, including making oral and written presentations, conveying agency policies accurately to the public, and ensuring cooperative interactions between administrative and legal personnel. Additionally, the attorney acts as a legal advisor to the office's administrative staff and fosters a collaborative working environment. There is an opportunity for a hybrid office/remote work schedule following the completion of the initial training period.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the position must be admitted to the New York State Bar and meet one of the following criteria: one year of satisfactory legal experience in the United States following admission to any state bar, or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Intern. It is required for incumbents to maintain good standing with the New York State Bar for the duration of their employment. For Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience post-bar admission in relevant legal areas. For AL III, candidates should have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience in relevant legal areas. Preferred skills for this role include exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities, excellent writing, legal research, and analytical skills, strong organizational, management, and training capabilities, and preferably supervisory experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint is also desired.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Staff Attorney position is $92, to $106,.
