Job Title: Litigation Paralegal
Job Responsibilities:
- Draft and prepare pleadings, including complaints, answers, motions, and discovery documents, as well as other legal documents.
- Conduct research into party identity, location, and asset searches.
- Organize and manage case files, including electronic file organization.
- Create trial notebooks for attorneys.
- Draft deposition summaries for attorney review.
- Organize and review discovery documents to determine responsiveness and privilege.
- Obtain service of process and assist with the issuance of summons and writs.
- Edit and format briefs and memorandums for submission to the courts.
- Manage docket of deadlines and case priorities to ensure timely filings and actions.
- Oversee document storage and production, including handling electronic discovery processes.
- Communicate professionally with clients and court personnel on a daily basis.
- Attend weekly meetings as needed and update attorneys on the status of active cases.
- File documents with the courts as required.
- Maintain accurate records of all communications, expenses, and case documents, including client intake sheets and pleadings.
- Keep detailed and accurate daily billable hour records, with a goal to bill 1550 hours per year to client matters and collect two-and-one-half times annual compensation in client fees.
- Assist local counsel for out-of-state cases with discovery and obtaining documents and information from clients.
Education and Experience Information:
- An excellent attitude and team player mentality are essential.
- Five or more years of civil litigation experience are preferred.
- An associate degree or higher is required.
- Paralegal certification from an ABA-approved program is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines is necessary.
- Excellent grammar and writing skills are required.
- Knowledge and mastery of MS Office, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, Adobe, and Nuance are necessary.
- Experience with federal court filings and systems such as PACER and ECF, state court filings and systems such as VJEFS and OCRA, and a working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil and Appellate Procedure and Supreme Court of Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure are preferred.
- Experience with post-judgment collections processes, including local and foreign judgment docketing, debtors’ interrogatories, garnishments, estate claims, etc., is beneficial.
- Experience with case management software is a plus.
