Job Title: Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)
Job Responsibilities:
Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) at the organization serve a critical role similar to Superior Court Judges in non-jury trials. The responsibilities of an ALJ include:
- Presiding over contested matters in administrative hearings.
- Making credibility determinations and resolving medical conflicts.
- Analyzing complex legal issues and applying statutory and case law across all relevant areas.
- Performing adjudicatory duties such as scheduling and conducting hearings, ruling on motions, taking testimony, reviewing documentary evidence, and issuing written orders and decisions in all assigned cases.
- Managing and overseeing a judicial docket, including scheduling conferences and hearings.
- Conducting mediations or settlement conferences and reviewing matters outside of active litigation, such as non-litigated settlement agreements.
Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must have over 10 years of experience in the practice of law, with a minimum of 5 years' experience in Workers' Compensation, employment law, or related areas of practice.
- Prior judicial experience, litigation experience, or administrative law experience is preferred.
- Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required. An active Arizona State Bar license is necessary.
- Graduation from an accredited college of law is mandatory.
Salary Information:
- The salary for the Administrative Law Judge position is $91,.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge:
- Legal research methods and legal principles.
- Arizona Workers' Compensation, Minimum Wage, and Earned Paid Sick Time statutory, case law, and applicable rules.
- Arizona Rules of Civil Procedure and administrative rules, policies, and practices applicable to matters adjudicated before the organization.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and the ALJ case management Salesforce platform.
Skills:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in legal research and writing.
- Strong logic and analytical reasoning skills.
- Effective time management and case management skills.
- Competency in computer skills, including Google, Gmail, G Suite, Word, database, and view center systems.
Abilities:
- Ability to analyze varied and complex legal issues and apply applicable legal principles.
- Draft clear, concise, and complete written decisions within statutorily mandated deadlines.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse customers, including injured workers, lay witnesses, expert medical witnesses, and attorneys.
- Work cooperatively with colleagues and support staff.
- Travel throughout Arizona for the purpose of conducting hearings.
- Recognize and engage individuals with different backgrounds, characteristics, and perspectives to bridge gaps in understanding differing viewpoints and ensure diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.
Additional Information:
- This position may offer the ability to work remotely within Arizona, depending on the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.
- The position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, adhering to Driver’s License Requirements.
