Job Title: Child Support Officer III
Job Responsibilities:
Child Support Officers (CSOs) play a crucial role in the **Members Only**’s (OAG) Child Support Division by conducting detailed investigations to locate absent parents. Their responsibilities include assisting in establishing paternity, obtaining court orders for financial support and health care coverage for children, enforcing child support orders, and responding to customer inquiries. They promote the involvement of both parents in their children’s lives and collaborate with state agencies and community organizations to serve families in Texas.
Essential duties involve:
- Conducting detailed in-office investigations to locate parties, verify employment, and determine assets
- Preparing documents related to legal and administrative actions to establish or enforce child support orders
- Negotiating lump sum payments from noncustodial parents who owe past due child/medical support
- Negotiating out-of-court settlements and agreements with parties
- Monitoring child support cases and referring delinquent cases for appropriate enforcement actions
- Documenting all case actions using agency tools such as the Texas Child Support Enforcement System (TXCSES) and case/court documents
- Reviewing and maintaining child support virtual files for accuracy in the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repository
- Reviewing cases to determine eligibility for closure
- Attending court to assist legal staff as needed
- Researching case information on computer systems including TXCSES
- Maintaining current knowledge of child support policies and procedures, Texas Family Law, federal regulations, and other states’ IV-D regulations
- Assessing child support cases to determine the appropriate case action
- Explaining Child Support Program policies, procedures, and regulations to customers
- Responding to customer inquiries and complaints
- Assessing the validity of complaints against the IV-D program with impartiality
- Serving as a Notary Public
- Ensuring security and confidentiality of sensitive information
- Complying with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for the position include graduation from high school or an equivalent. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred, but experience in related fields may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. Relevant fields include full-time Child Support Program, credit collections, investigations, legal assistant, legal secretary, customer service, or IV-A eligibility specialist.
Candidates must have at least one year of full-time experience in the aforementioned fields. Additionally, knowledge of investigative practices and techniques is essential, along with skills in interviewing, negotiating, using personal computers for word-processing and data entry/retrieval, basic mathematical computations, handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, and effective communication.
Preferred qualifications include graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.
Salary Information:
The salary for the Child Support Officer III position is between $4, and $4, monthly. The position is non-exempt from overtime and requires a regular, full-time schedule of 40 hours per week.
Additional Information:
The role requires the ability to work in person at the assigned OAG work location and perform all tasks at the designated workspace. Candidates must be able to collaborate, train, and mentor colleagues in person. The position may require more than 40 hours of work as needed and in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs., and travel (including overnight travel) up to 15%. A typing test is required at the time of the interview, with a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute.
