Job Title: Director of Accounting/Controller

Job Responsibilities:

The Director of Accounting/Controller at the law firm is responsible for overseeing the law firm's financial management function. This position involves supervising and directing various accounting functions, including:

- Managing general accounting functions such as chart of accounts, general ledger, billing process, cash receipts, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, petty cash, bank reconciliations, and client trust funds.
- Establishing and maintaining appropriate internal controls to safeguard assets, ensuring proper accounting of transactions, and promoting operational efficiency within the department and throughout the law office.
- Operating and maintaining the computerized accounting system.
- Maintaining primary banking relationships and managing cash projections.
- Supervising payroll and payroll withholding functions and coordinating employee payroll matters with the Personnel Department.
- Coordinating the annual independent audit of the law office's financial records.
- Utilizing and being familiar with all accounting computer systems and procedures, and maintaining and updating procedural manuals as needed.
- Creating and maintaining documentation of existing accounting processes, manual execution steps, and evaluating related internal controls, including journal entries and general ledger, cash receipts and application, trust accounting, payroll, sourcing, and cash disbursements.
- Ensuring the maintenance of retention files for the required period.
- Responsible for the timely submission of all local, state, and federal tax reports.
- Assisting the Chief Financial Officer and Management Committee in financial management and analysis as required.
- Coordinating with CPA firms on tax issues and accounting.
- Physical presence in a law firm office is essential, with some remote work possible by agreement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

- Knowledge of accounting and financial management principles to manage the financial health of the law offices.
- High degree of accuracy in work and detail-oriented.
- Ability to demonstrate impeccable integrity in personal and fiduciary matters.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a sense of urgency.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines.
- Professional presence to work with all levels of management, a diverse group of attorneys, and staff.
- Ability to conduct complex and detailed analysis of financial situations for up to 100% of work time.
- Occasionally work more than 40 hours per week to perform essential duties.

Education and Experience:

- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent.
- Seven plus years of related work experience.
- CPA/MBA preferred but not required.
- Financial and internal control auditing experience is a plus.
- Experience with law firms and Aderant systems is helpful but not required.
