Job Title: Claim Specialist L1, F/T - TORT

Job Responsibilities:
The position of Claim Specialist Level 1 within the Tort Division involves various responsibilities performed under the supervision of legal staff, attorneys, or higher-level personnel. Key duties include:

- Investigating and assisting in the preparation for trial of less serious claims for and against the City.
- Securing evidence by interviewing interested parties, witnesses, officers, and other involved individuals.
- Assisting attorneys by preparing and processing subpoenas, motions, affidavits, legal notices, and other forms related to legal proceedings and transactions.
- Assisting in obtaining, reviewing, updating, and maintaining physical and electronic case files.
- Obtaining, collecting, assembling, and reviewing records and data for attorneys.
- Performing legal research, database searches, and site searches.
- Submitting, obtaining, and filing documents from various courts and City agencies throughout the City.
- Checking records and requesting adjournments to various courts as necessary.
- Preparing discovery materials for production.
- Performing routine administrative duties such as photocopying, filing, scanning, archiving, data entry, indexing, reserving conference rooms, and managing attorneys' calendars.
- Engaging in physical activities such as lifting and carrying boxes and files, climbing stairs, and traveling throughout the City on public transportation, often in various weather conditions while carrying files.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the position of Claim Specialist Level 1 must meet one of the following qualifications:

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university, along with two years of full-time satisfactory experience in investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss.
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and four years of full-time satisfactory experience in investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss.
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to the above qualifications. College education may substitute for experience on the basis that 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university may substitute for each year of required experience. All candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

Preferred Skills:
- An educational background in . Law, . Legal Studies, . Paralegal Studies, or . Political Science.
- Experience in paralegal (legal assistant) services involving the American legal system.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
- Very good organizational and computer skills, including proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word).
- Proficiency in LexisNexis, Lexis Advance, Adobe Acrobat, and court-related sites is a plus.
- Ability to use discretion when handling sensitive, confidential documents and information.
- Capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the Claim Specialist Level 1 position is $46, – $74,.
