Job Title: AGENCY ATTORNEY INTERNE
Job Responsibilities:
The Agency Attorney Interne within the Employment Law Unit of the Office of Legal Affairs is tasked with various legal responsibilities under the supervision of a Supervising or Senior Attorney. The core duties include:
- Collecting and analyzing evidence related to employee misconduct under Section 75 of the Civil Service Law and assessing unfitness under Section 72.
- Drafting disciplinary charges and summaries regarding employees’ unfitness for City medical examiners.
- Preparing cases for trial, arguing them at internal hearings, and before administrative bodies.
- Participating in interviews with witnesses and subjects, and determining the advisability of presenting witnesses, the admissibility of evidence, and legal strategies.
- Identifying legal questions that require further analysis or review and referring them with appropriate memoranda to the proper authority.
- Recommending settlements, negotiating, drafting, and processing stipulations of settlement, and conducting legal research to prepare briefs, memoranda, and other documents.
- Investigating and responding to discrimination charges filed with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, New York State Division of Human Rights, and New York City Commission on Human Rights by preparing position statements based on facts and applicable law.
- Attending arbitrations and acting as a liaison with the New York City Office of Labor Relations, as well as serving as a liaison with the New York City Law Department on lawsuits involving employment discrimination and discipline.
- Collaborating with other divisions and program areas, including Personnel and the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity.
- Advising on legal aspects of the enforcement and administration of acts, rules, laws, and regulations.
Education and Experience Information:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections or ) or admission to the New York State Bar.
Preferred Skills:
- Background in Employment Law.
- Experience in litigation and oral argument.
- Strong research and writing skills.
- Strong analytical abilities.
- Ability to multitask and perform under pressure and deadlines.
Salary Information:
Salary range for the position is $68, – $82,.
