The NYC Department of Health/Mental Hygiene is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual for the role of Paralegal Aide within the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). The selected candidate will assist the OCME Legal Department with various administrative tasks and substantive assignments, under the direction of the General Counsel and other attorneys. This is a full-time position with a salary range of $48, - $68,.

The OCME investigates cases of persons who die within New York City, and their core purpose is to protect public health and serve impartial justice through forensic science and medicine. Their work is guided by the core values of CARES - Commitment, Accountability, Resilience, Excellence, and Service.

Key responsibilities for this role include assisting with requests for records, coordinating communication with local District Attorney Offices, conducting basic legal research, drafting correspondence and subpoenas, and assisting with various administrative matters. The selected candidate will also assist with litigation matters and other projects within the Legal Department, and will be responsible for processing mail and responding to inquiries from the public and outside attorneys.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must have a baccalaureate degree, an associate degree or 60 semester credits, or a four-year high school diploma with four years of full-time experience in paralegal services. A combination of education and experience may also be considered. Additionally, candidates must have experience with the American Legal System. Paralegal Certification or undergraduate credits may be substituted for experience. Individuals with one additional year of pertinent paralegal experience or a baccalaureate degree may be eligible for Assignment Level II duties and pay.
